PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,148, dated October 5, 1897.
Application filed December 5, 1896. Serial No. 614,550. (No model.)
To all whom zit may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented'a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 isa plan view of the blank of which my box is made. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the box partly struck up. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the box still further struck up. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the box in the condition shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar end elevation showing the end flaps folded in. Fig. 6 is a similar end elevation showing the complete box. Fig. 7 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a vertical cross-section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a vertical cross-section similar to that of Fig. 8, but showing the box completely struck up and the cover down. Fig. 10 is a view of the bottom of one end of the box, looking in the direction of the arrow 10 g of Fig. '7.
My invention relates to paper boxes, and has for its object to provide a box to be made from a single blank, easily struck up, secure when so struck up, and formed with a minimum waste of stock. Iobtain this object particularly by the employment of the locking devices hereinafter shown and described.
Referring to the drawings by letter, and particularly to Fig. 1, A represents the bottom of the box; B, one side thereof; C, the remaining side, and D the top or lid hinged to the side C. These four parts are all shown of the same size, but this is not necessary on less the box is to be square in cross-section. The bottom A is provided at each end with a flap a. In each flap 0-, near the outer edge thereof, is formed a slot to, parallel to the said edge. The side B is provided at each end with a flap b. Theside C is provided at each end with a flap 0. Each such flap upon that side adjacent to the side a carries a tongue c, which is preferably formed by being cut out from the said fiapa. The corresponding notch thus formed in the flap a has nothing to do with the operation of the box or its lock and need not be lettered or described. To each flap c, moreover, upon the side farthest from the flap a, is hinged a second flap 0 of the same size and shape. Out of the flapc 'there is out a tongue 0 so that the same shall be hinged to the adjacent edge of the flap c. The aperture thus formed in the flap has nothing to do with the operation of the box or its lock and need not be lettered or described. All of the end flaps a, b, c, and o are preferably of the same sizeand shape, the first three all overlying one another to form the end of the box. The top or lid D is not provided with end flaps, but is provided with a narrow side flap d, hinged to its outer or free edge.
The operation of these locking devices will best be understood from a description of the a method in which the box is struck up. The side B is first turned up at right angles with the bottom A, the end flaps a are turned up at right angles to the bottom Aand to the now vertical side B, and the end flaps B are swung in against the end flaps a. This position of the part-s is-shown in Fig. 2. C is now swung up at right angles to the bottom A, carrying with it the attached end flaps and the top D. This position of the parts is shown in plan in Fig.3 and in end elevation in Fig. 4c. The end flaps c are now swungin against the end flaps b in the direction of the arrowsof Fig. 3, carrying with them the end fiaps 0 This position of the parts is shown in end elevation in Fig. 5. Each tongue 0 is now swung inward over the upper edge of the end flaps b and a and is inserted through the slot at from the inside of the box outward, so that the end of the tongue lies and is held between the end flap a and the end flap b. This position of the tongue 0 is particularly illusclosed, the two end flaps 0 which as yet remain in a vertical position, are swung down into a horizontal position, the lid D is likewise swung down, and the flap cl inserted inside of The side I the box, as particularly shown in Fig. 9. The box is then in its completed form, as shown in end elevation in Fig. 6.
It will be obvious that certain modifications of the structure hereinabove described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. Thus, for example, the end flaps 0 may be altogether omitted, the flap a being provided merely with the tongues o and 0 Again, the cover D might be otherwise secured to the body of the box or might be altogether separate therefrom without interfering with the operation of the locking devices of the ends. Finally, many changes may be made in the relative size and form of the parts, the shape of the tongues, &c., Without altering substantially the mode of operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A 1. In a knockdown paper box, the bottom A, with end flaps a, provided with slots a; the side B, with end flaps b; and side 0, with end flaps c, said end flaps being provided with tongues .0 adapted to be tucked through the slots a and between the flaps a and b when the box is struck up.
2. In a knockdown paper box, the bottom A, with end flaps a, provided with slots at; the side 13, with end flaps b; and side 0, with end flaps c, said end flaps being provided with tongues 0 adapted to be tucked through the slots a, and with tongues 0 adapted to be tucked between the bottom edges of the end flaps aand b, when the box is struck up.
3. In a knockdown paper box, the bottom A, with end flaps o, provided with slots a; the side B, with end flaps b; and side 0, with end flaps c and 0 the said end flaps 0 being provided with tongues 0 adapted to be tucked through the slots a, and with tongues 0 adapted to be tucked between the bottom edges of the end flaps a and b, when the box is struck up.
4. Ina knockdown paper box, the bottom A, with end flaps a, provided with slots a; the side 13, with end flaps I); the side 0, with end flaps c and c, the said end flaps 0 being provided with tongues c adapted to be tucked through the slots at, and with tongues 0 adapted to be tucked between the bottom edges of the end flaps a and b, when the box is struck up; and the lid D hinged to the side 0 and provided with a side flap d.
5. In a knockdown paper box, the bottom A having the end flaps a; with the side 13 havin g the flaps b; and the side 0 having the end flaps 0 provided with the tongues 0 projecting from the bottom edges adapted to be inserted between the flaps d and the flaps b, when the box is struck up.
