UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND BERKEMEYER, OF SELLERSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OI ONE-HALF TO HENRY BERKEMEYER, OF ALLENTOIVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHAIR ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,044, dated-July 14, 1896.
Application filed June 29,1895.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND BERKE- MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sellersville, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chair Attachments, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a book and other rests attachable to a chair, as hereinafter set forth, whereby it is adapted to the use of students or other literary persons.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an attachment to a chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate the corresponding parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the base of a chair having the stud a thereon. On the said stud so is mounted a vertical sleeve a, to which is secured the angular or bent arm 15. A pivot e, fitting into the upper end of the limb (Z of the arm, is screwed to the lower end of the coupling f, to whose other end is secured a horizontal arm g. The coupling h on the outer end of the arm g is attached to the socket i, in which the pivot j is journaled, said pivot being rigidly connected at a proper angle with the bracket 70 of the writing-table L, so as to give the latter the proper slope or inclination desired.
Rotatably fitted on the stud :0, above the sleeve a, is the sleeve 1), to which is secured the angular or bent arm B. Said sleeves are independent of each other, and thus the arms 13 B may be moved or adjusted separately on said stud. A boss on is pivotally secured to the upper part of the vertical limb of said sleeve B and has attached to it a horizontal arm 19, to the outer end of which the coupling q is secured. A lower book-rest s is provided with a pivot or stud '1, which is j ournaled in the upper end of said coupling q.
In a socket formed in the upper end of a stud held in the boss m is the journal '6 of a bent arm n, the main portion of which is in clined at an angle of forty-five degrees to its end portions, which ends are vertical.
Serial No. 554,507. (No model.)
C designates an arm which is journaled in a socket on the limb to of the arm n, and is adjustably connected with. the upper bookrest D. The horizontal limbs of the arms B and B are of such length that the vertical limbs thereof are outside of the base of the chair, and said limbs extend upwardly above the seat of the said chair.
The writing-table L is suitably provided with openings and grooves for ink-wells and penholders, respectively. It will be apparent that by means of the connections described the parts are readily placed in any desired position to accommodate the occupant of the chair, and that they may be either easily separated or put together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to soon re by Letters Patent, is-
1. An attachment to a chair consisting of a vertical stud on its base, a sleeve mounted on said stud, the angular arm B secured to said sleeve, the horizontal arm 9 pivotally connected with the upper end of a vertical limb of said arm 15, the socketi attached by the coupling h to the outer end of said arm g, the writing-table L having the bracket 7; with the pivot j journaled in said socket i, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. An attachment to a chair consisting of a vertical stud on its base, a sleeve mounted on said stud, an arm secured to said sleeve having a vertical limb, a boss pivotally connected with the upper part of said vertical limb and provided with a horizontal arm having a socket on its outer end, a book-rest piv-' oted in said socket, a bent arm pivotally secured in said boss and another arm pivoted in the upper end of said bent arm, and a bookrest secured to the latter-named arm, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A chair having a stud on its base, a sleeve mounted 011 said stud, having a boss on its side, the arm B connected with said stud, and having a vertical limb outside of said base, the boss m pivotally attached to the upper part of the vertical limb of said arm 13, and provided with a horizontal arm p, the coupling g on the outer end of said arm 1), abookrest having a pivot journaled in the upper end of said coupling q, an inclined arm havin g on one end a vertical dependinglimb journaled in a boss m, and on the other end an upwardly-projecting arm with socket, the arm G journaled in said socket, and a book-rest secured to said arm, said parts being combined substantially as described.
i. A chair having an arm mounted on its base and having a vertical limb outside of said base, a boss pivotally secured on the upper end of the vertical limb of said arm, the bent arm or having an inclined main portion, a vertical lower end journaled in a socket in said boss, the arm C having an end journaled in a socket in a vertical upper limb u of the bent arm n, and a book-rest connected with said arm 0, said parts being combined substantially as described.
5. An attachment to a chair consisting of a vertical stud on its base, sleeves mounted one above the other, both on said stud, an arm connected with each of said sleeves and having a vertical limb on opposite sides of said chair outside of said base, a horizontal arm pi votally connected with each of said vertical limbs, and a book-rest pivotally held on said horizontal arm, said parts being combined substantially as described.
