SWING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1917.
Application filed. December 30, 1914. Serial No. 879,750.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUoIoUs D. BURLING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hubbard, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Swing, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to swings, one of its objects being to provide a deviceof this character having -a novel arrangement of seats whereby as many as three persons may comfortably occupy the swing or, if desired, two of the seats can be adjusted relative to each other so as to form a cradle while the third seat can be occupied by a nurse or other attendant.
A further object is to provide a structure of this character which is simple, durable and eflicient and can be made at comparatively slight cost.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter. described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the pre- 7 ferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of the swing showing the seats arranged to form a cradle, one of the seats being positioned for use by a nurse or other attendant. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the seat board, the seats being indicated by dott'ed lines in positions which can be occupied thereby while the swing is to be used by three persons. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section througha portion of the seat board and a portion of one of the seats thereon, and showing the adjustable connection therebetween. Fig. 4 is a detailview of a clip used in connection with the pivot of the intermediate chair. 1
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the seat board preferably provided at each end with transverse reinforcing strips 2, there being eye bolts 3 extended through the corner portions of the board for engagement by supporting chains 4; or the like. The longitudinal edges of the board 1 are preferably formed with segmental recesses 5 between the centers and the ends thereof and extending through the seat board near each end is a clamping bolt 6 the upper end portion of which is arranged within. the bottom 7 of an adjustable seat 8 resting on the'board 1. Each of the seats is capable of swinging about the bolt 6 as a center and, consequently, each of the seats 8 can be adjusted angularly to any position desired relative to the board 1.
For example, and as shown in Fig. 1, each seat can be arranged so as to extend either transversely or longitudlnally of the board 1.
A central slot 9 is formed in the middle 1' portion of the board 1 and receives a clampmg bolt 10 similar to the bolt 6 hereinbefore referred to, this bolt 10 being mounted within the bottom of a seat 11 similar to seats 8. This middle seat 11 can be arranged transversely of the board as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 or, if desired, can be disposed longitudinally on the board and opposltely to one of the seats 8, any suitable means, such as a hook and eye 12, being provided, for fastening the sides of the two seats together so that, when the seats are thus positioned, they will cooperate to form a cradle. The remaining seat 8 can then be adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1 so thatwhile a child is in the cradle formed by the connected seats 8 and 11, its attendant can occupy the seat 8 and can manipulate the swing. As shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the seats 8 and 11 can be disconnected and arranged to hold three persons, it being preferred to have the seats 8 facing each other while the central seat is disposed transversely. Each of the bolts 6 and 10 is provided with a clamping nut 13 whereby the seats can be securely fastened in any positions to Which they may be adjusted.
By providing the slot 9, it is possible to adjust the seat 11 toward or from the seat 8 with which it cooperates.
It is to be understood that when the intermediate chair is not in use as a portion of a cradle but is extended transversely as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the bolt 10 forming a pivot for said chair can be held against or close to one end wall of the slot 9 by means of a clip such as shown in Fig. 4. This clip includes a hooked plate 14 or the like pivotally connected to the bottom of the board 5 and adapted to swing into engagement with the bolt and hold it against movement longitudinally of the slot sition of the crib from one end of the sup-- port or board 1 to the other end thereof. Such an operation may be desirable'when it is sought to dispose the infant in the crib out of a draft, or in or out of the sunshine, it being obvious from the nature of the invention, that this device cannot be carried about from place to place, as weather con ditions may demand.
Independently of the foregoing, it is at times desirable to shift the operators chair from one end of the support 1 to the other. If the swing is suspended on a porch, the operator may desire to sit at one end of the swing, in order that he may look down from the end of a porch into a side alley or yard. Likewise, it may be advantageous that the operator shall sit at the opposite end of the swing, so that it will be possible 3 an intermediate chair carried by the support, all of the chairs including arms; means for mounting all of the chairs on the support forrotation on vertical axes, whereby the arms of the intermediate chair may be made to cooperate with the arms of either end chair to form a crib, and whereby the remaining chair will form an operators chair; and means for locking the intermediate chair to either end chair when the arms of the intermediate chair and the arms of either end chair cooperate to form a crib.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
