BATH APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,292, dated April 14, 1896. Application led July 8, 1895. Serial No. 555,277. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that we, MICHAEL J. LYoNs and LEVI BEEMER, citizens of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath Apparatus; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in bath-brush apparatus, and is an improvement on Patent No. 544,362, granted August 13, 1895, and pending application, Serial N o, 541,477, filed March 11, 1895, both of Michael J. Lyons.
The invention consists of the combination of a suitable support, a hollow lever pivotally mounted on the same and having awater-inlet and suitable spraying-outlets, a scrubbing device-for instance, a brush or spongemounted on said' lever, and a handle for operating said lever.
It also consists of the combination of a suitable support, a hollow lever pivotally connected thereto and provided at its outer end with a hollow perforated yoke, a spring connecting said lever and said support whereby the former moves under spring-tension, a scrubbing device on one arm of said yoke, and an operating-handle on the other.
It also consists of certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinaftermore particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the devices embodying our invention, the yoke being raised to an upright, or nearly so, position. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same placed in proximity to a bath-tub, the yoke being lowered to a horizontal position. Fig. 3 represents a detail central vertical section through the sponge-holder. Fig. 4 represents a detail top plan view of the brush-clamp. Fig. 5 represents a modified form of bracket-support. Fig. 6 represents a support in form of a standard, and Fig. 7 represents a detail side elevation of the milled joint between the operating-handle and the outer end of the yoke.

The supporting bracket or standard B com prises a suitable attaching-plate b, an arm b', rigid therewith, and a hollow vertical head b2 at the outer end of said arm. The hinge D is composed of two segmental members CZ and d. The member CZ is provided with a hollow stem d2, which passes loosely through the hollow cross-head b2 and is slightly ared at its end to prevent its pulling out of the same. It is also provided with a rubber buffer d3, the office of which will be hereinafter described.
The member d is similar in shape to the member CZ and is provided with a screwthreaded lever-attaching stem d4, having a water-su'pply-pipe nipple Said member is also provided with an adjustable stop screw or bolt d6, which is adapted to come in contact with the buffer cl3 and thus limit the movement of said hinge. The two members d CZ/ are connected by a bolt dl, which passes loosely through their respective ends and is suitably secured in position. A spiral spring d8 surrounds this bolt and bears with one end upon the member CZ and with the other upon member d', so thatv any hinge movement of said members is under spring-tension.
The hollow lever C is screwed into the stem d4 at one end and is provided at the opposite end with aT-pipe joint c, having a cock c therein. The respective halves of the hollow yoke E are secured in the ends of the T-joint c. Said yoke E and the joint c are provided in their sides with perforations through which the water escapes in streams, thus forming a shower-bath. The outer closed end of one arm of the yoke is enlarged and apertured at t', as is also the closed end e of the handle E', as indicated by the letter l, apertured ends being milled on their inner faces and secured together by a bolt and thumb-screw e3 e4, respectively.
It will be seen from the aforegoing that the IOO handle can be turned or adjusted on the bolt e3 by loosening the thumb-screw e4 and locked in the desired adjusted position by again tightening the thumb-screw. Both the han dle and the endof the yoke carrying the same are provided around the perforations with nipples t' i, which are connected by a flexible pipe I, so that water is carried from the hollow yoke to the hollow handle. The other arm of the yoke is provided with an enlarged apertured split head e5, provided with lugs e6, said lugs being secured together by a bolt e7 and thumb-nut es.
A scrubbing-brush support Fis adapted to be mounted in the split head c5 by means of a stud f with which it is provided. This support consists of a yoke-shaped piece f', to the middle of which said stud is attached. 4The respective ends of the yoke are provided with blocks f2 f3. The block f3 is provided with a screw-threaded aperture, through which a clamping thumb-bolt f4 is passed.- This bolt is formed at its inner end f5 approximately ball shape and iits into a corresponding socket f in a clamping-block f7.
It will be seen from the aforegoing that the block f7 can have a swivel movement aga-inst the brush that is clamped between it and the block f2, so as to accommodate itself to theside of said brush.
A spongescup Gis also adapted to be mounted in the split head e5 by means of a stud g with which it is provided. The cup conn prises a shallow oval cup or receptacle g',- provided near its upper end with thumbscrews g2, by which a cap g3 issecured in position. This cap is provided with a central aperture gJ and side slots g5, the better to allow said cap to be slipped down over the top of the cup after the sponge has been placed in position. After the cap has been secured by the thumb-screws g2 the sponge is pulled partly through the aperture g4, so as to protrude in front of the cap.
The arms of the yoke are provided with short pendent flexible aprons II, secured thereto by clamps h, the outer edges or margin of said aprons being provided with a stiffening of wire, so that they will remain always in the proper position to prevent the spray from the opposite side of the yoke from being thrown onto the door or the walls. Any suit-V able water-supply pipe is attached to the nipple d5.
In the modified form of support shown in Fig. 5 the bracket comprises a plate 'In and an arm m secured thereto and provided with a socketed enlargement m2 at itsy outer end. The hinge in this case is provided with a stud m3, which fits down within the socketed enlargement fm2 and thus permits the apparatus to have the desired lateral swivel movement.
In Fig. 6 we have shown a support in form of a standard, which isformed at its upper end with a suitable socket m4 for receiving the stud mi.
NVhen the device is to be used,- the brush or sponge is attached to the arm of the yoke. The bather then turns on the water and places himself between the arms of the yoke and grasps the operating-handle and moves it rapidly up and down with the brush or sponge in contact with his back or sides. The water from-the perforated yoke strikes his body on three sides, and thus he is thoroughly washed without any effort on his own part otherwise than to move the yoke up and down.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

5. In a bath-brush apparatus, the combination with a suitable support, of a hollow lever pivotally mounted thereon, a hollow perforated yoke on said lever, an operating-handle on one end of said yoke, a detachable sponge-cup adapted to be attached to the other end of `said yoke and consisting of a cup having an attachingstud and an apertured detachable cover adapted to be secured in position on the top of said cup, substantially as described.
6. In a bath-brush apparatus, the combination with a suitable support, of a hollow lever pivotally mounted thereon, a hollow perforated yoke on said lever, an operating-handle on one end of said yoke, and a brush clamp adapted to be secured to the opposite end of said yoke and consisting of a clamping-yoke having an attaching-stud, a stationary clamp-block and an adjustable clampblock, substantially as described.
