T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PHILLIPS, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orutches, of which the following is a full,
clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to crutches, and has for its principal object to furnish crutches with a suitable arm-rest.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my crutch. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the upper portion of my crutch in the form employing an arm-rest or crutch-head having a loose connection with the socket. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the upper section of my crutch in the form in which the arm-rest or crutch-head can have only a circular movement. Fig. 4. is a transverse sectional view of my crutch, showing a form of the arm-rest having a gooseneck connection with its socket.
In my device the body of the crutch 4 is surmounted by a ferrule or socket 2, having an opening 5 in its lower part to receive the members composing the body of the crutch, which are rigidly held in place by the rivet 7 or other suitable means, and an opening 6 in its upper part to receive the shank 3.
The arm-rest or crutch-head l is rigidly attached to the shank 3. The shank 3 is gooseneck in form, as shown in Fig. 4:.
The ferrule or socket2 may have its upper cavity formed with a contraction or collar 8 below its mouth, in which case the shank 3 is formed with an annular enlargement at its lower end to prevent the arm-rest or crutchhead from becoming detached from the crutch when in use, as shown in Fig. 2, and is made elastic by being split vertically, as shown in Fig. 1. The shank 3 is gooseneck in form, as shown in Fig. 4, for the purpose of carrying the crutch away from the body when in use. In either form of my invention the arm-rest or crutch-head 1 may be removed at pleasure from the ferrule or socket 2 for purposes of substitution or repair.
The principal advantages of my construction are as follows: The arm-rest or crutch-head is permitted to remain in position under the arm of the patient, while permitting independent lateral movement of the crutch, and the crutchhead or arm-rest are readily removable, so that different sizes or forms of crutch-head or armrest can be used, in addition to which the gooseneck shank 3 enables the body of the crutch 4 to be carried away from contact with the side of the user, a function which is of great value in cases of deformity of the lower limbs.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a crutch, an arm-rest or crutch-head provided with a gooseneck shank and pivotally mounted on the body of the crutch, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a crutch, an arm-rest or crutch-head provided with a gooseneck shank and removably and pivotally mounted on the body of the crutch, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
8. In a crutch, the combination of a ferrule having an opening to receive the body of the crutch and another split opening to receive the arm-rest or crutch-head, and an arm-rest or crutch head pivotally and removably mounted therein and provided with a gooseneck shank, as specified.
4:. In a crutch, an arm-rest or crutch-head having a gooseneck shankpivotally and removably mounted in a ferrule surmounting the body of the crutch, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
