UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SIIRIER, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
SUPPORTER FOR TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,785, dated January 7, 1896.
I Application filed September 16, 1895. Serial No. 562,684. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SHRIER, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporters for Trousers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide new and improved supporters for trousers, more especially designed for the use of riders of animals, bicycles, &c., and arranged to effectively support the abdomen and testes, irrespective of the movement of the leg portions of the trousers, at the same time insuring a convenient seating in the saddle.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front perspective View of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same as applied. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the trunks. Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-section of the fastening device for the trunks, and Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view of the seat-seam.
The trousers are provided at the inside of the waistband A with elastic loops or buttonhole-strips B adapted to be engaged by buttons O, secured to the outside of the waistband D of a supporting-trunk E extending loosely within the upper part of the trousers. The supporting-trunk is provided at the lower ends of the very short leg parts E E with welts, each containing an elastic F to draw this part of the trunk-legs firmly onto the users legs and away from the trousers legs G G respectively. The trunk E is provided at the front above the crotch with the usual flaps I-I, adapted to be fastened together by buttons I or like devices, the said flaps 11 being opposite the front flaps J of the trousers. The sides of the trunk-legs E E are formed with side openings to form flaps connected with each of the legs, an elastic loop F held on one flap and engaging a button F 011 the other flap. This loop F is formedby one end of the elastic F above mentioned.
The seat of the trousers is made of two pieces, K and K, joined at the crotch by abutting the edges of the material one against the other, as plainly shown in Fig. 6. Tabs L L are placed over the abutting edges to overlap the same, to form a comparatively thin scam, the tabs being fastened by stitches N to the adjacent sides of the pieces K K. A seam formed in the manner described is not liable to injure the rider, as is the case with seams in which the material is doubled up and stitched, as heretofore practiced. The outer edges of the pieces K K are sewed to the trousers-legs in the usual manner.
It will be seen that when the trousers are worn, the trunks within the trousers form a complete support for the abdomen and testes, to protect the same from injury in mounting and dismounting the wheel. At the same time the movement of the trousers-legs caused by the motion of the rider while propellin g the wheel will not affect and disturb the supporting position of the trunks, as the lower part thereof is wholly disconnected from the trousers-legs and crotch.
The trunks can be conveniently and quickly removed from the trousers for washing and other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a pair of trousers, of a supporter in the form of trunks and yieldingly secured to the Waist band of the trousers, said trunks having short leg portions, the lower ends of which have side openings and are provided with elastic bands for contracting them around the limbs of the wearer and with elastic loops for closing the side openings, said loops being integral with the said elastic bands, substantially as described.
HENRY SHRIER.
