UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY- JAMES ROSCHI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BICYCLE-TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,334, dated June 18,1895.
Application filed February 16, 1895. Serial No. 538,684. (Io model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY JAMES RoscHI, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Trousers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to trousers for bicycle riders, and the invention has forits object to improve such trousers in various particulars, including the provision of an efficient supporter for giving support to the abdomen and testes, certain elastic gores at the'waist band, and novel leg attachments, whereby strains or rupture are avoided and the testes protected from injury and a comfortable adj ustment and fit of the garment are secured.
The invention will first be particularly explained in the following specification and then defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of bicycle-trousers embodying my invention, the view being taken from the front. Fig. 2 is a broken rear view showing the upper part of the trousers. Fig. 3 is a partial vertical section on line 3 3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4. is abroken front view of a pair of trousers embodying the invention, the front or front flap being turned down.
In manufacturing trousers in accordance with my invention, side openings are formed producing a front flap a and a rear flap b, of which the front flap is the smaller and does not extend quite to the sides but terminates short of the side seams. The back flap b is continued at each side around in front of the side scams 0 and overlaps at the front beneath the front flap a, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The front flap or preferably is provided with two elastic gores d, one at each side of the center, and the back flap 1) with a central elastic gore e.
A novel supporter f is provided in the trousers as follows: The supporter is secured at its side edges to the back flap b, at a short distance rearward from the front edges of said flap, and extends from side to side of the trousers, and usually in practice the supporter is seen that when the trousers are worn the sup porter f will be in about the position shown in Fig. 3, extending from its side edges forwardly around the front of the wearer, and form in effect a continuation of the rear flap b, and the narrowing lower part of the supporter will extend rearwardly to the crotch. The attachment thus forms an eflficient support for the abdomen and the testes, and lessens the liability of rupture or similar injuries. The seat of the trousers has preferably the ordinary reinforce g, thereon.
The legs h of the trousers are contracted and shaped below the knee to conform to and more snugly fit the legs of the wearer, and are open at one side, as shown in Fig. 1. Along one side edge of each of the side openings of the'legs a row of buttons 1' is secured a distance from the edge, and to the opposite overlapping edge of each opening at the inside a corresponding series of elastic tabs j is applied, and overlaid by the lining is as indicated in Fig. 1.
The elastic tabs j project from the edge to which they are secured, and are thus readily taken hold of, and they are formed with button-holes to engage the buttons 01. The elastic tabs and the elastic waist gores give a close but yielding fit of the trousers at the waist and calves, and afiord some range of adjustment to conform to the proportions of the wearer in the matter of girth and calf.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, trousers provided in their interior with a supporter attachment, having connection with the trousers on the inside thereof at the sides and secured at its center at the crotch, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, trousers having side openings forming front and back flaps, and provided between said flaps with a to the back flap, and secured at about the cen- Supporter attachmentsecured byitsside edges ter of its bottom edge to the trousers on the to the back flap, and secured at about the ceninside thereof at the center of the crotch, the ter of its bottom edge to the trousers on the said attachment being divided and having a 1' 5 inside thereof at the center of the crotch, sublaced connection at the point of divisi0n,sub- I5 stantially as described. stantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, trousers HARRY JAMES ROSCHI. having side openings forming front and back Vitnesses: flaps, and provided between said flaps with a JAooB LEONARD J ACOBI,
