RIDING-HABIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,203, dated January 27, 1891.

Be it known that I, HERMAN RossBERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Riding- Habits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in ladies riding-habits. having reference to the skirt portion thereof, its object being to produce a skirtcomposed of as few parts as is possible, avoiding all unnecessary seams. and having the parts so cut or constructed that the skirt is readily and easily secured to the leg of a wearer adjacent to the side opening which is provided for the entrance of the pom mel of the saddle.
The invention consists of a riding skirt made in two pieces and opened on one side for the entrance ot' the pommel, one of said pieces having a loop or strap formed therewith for engaginga short piece for surrounding one limb of the wearer above the knee, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed outin the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of the skirt as applied to a rider, showing in dotted lines the manner of holding the saine to the limbs. Fig. 2 is a View of the opposite side of the skirt. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the side or edges of the skirt thrown open. Fig'. 4 is a diagrammatical view showing the cut or shape of the pieces of fabric from which the skirt is made.
Referring' to the drawings, A designates the principal or main portion or piece of the skirt, the left-hand side thereof being longer than the opposite edge, so as to provide sufiicient material to fit over the bent knee of the rider and cause the lower ogee edge a to be perfectly straight or horizontal. The edge b is straight or slightly curved,the same forming one edge of an opening c in the side of the skirt.
B is the other portion or piece of which the skirt is composed, and it is provided with a concaved edge e, which is stitched or sewed to the opposite concaved edge d of the piece A. These edges are made in the shape shown in order to tighten the garment and have it t closely to the form. The piece B is also made with a darth for the same purpose and withthe concave edge i, which is stitched to a portion corresponding in length thereto of the convex edge 7o of the piece A. The edge f of lthis piece B forms the second edge of the opening c, and the edge g the lower edge of the skirt.
The piece A is provided with a loop endor extension m, which is formed from the same piece by darts r and s in piece A. This loop m is provided with a button or other fastening m to engage with a piece n, attached to the inner side of piece A. The loop m is designed to be passed around and secured upon the limb of the wearer above the knee. To the upper portion of the edge b of piece A :is secured a s tri p or elastic band or loop o, which is fastened around the limb below the knee.
To the inner sides of pieces A and B are secured straps or loops V, one to receive the toe of one foot and the other to receive the heel of the other foot, as shown in Fig. l.
In piece A is formed an opening t, to which the hooks or other fastenings are attached for securing the skirt around the waist of the wearer. An extension is secured to the inner edge of this opening, and a pocket u is formed therein.
In Fig. 2 it will be seen that the pommel of the saddle is designed to fit in the side opening of the skirt at W. This arrangement per-` mits the skirt to easily and quickly detach itself in case the rider suddenly leaves the saddle.
To those skilled in the art the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, and it will be especially observed that the skirt is composed of but two pieces. This is of special advantage in skirts made of heavy goods, since it avoids the clumsy seams which hurt the wearer. My invention entirely obviates this objectionable feature. Another important advantage of my invention is that the skirt cannot ride up, as occurs with the most of skirts as heretofore constructed, in rapid riding, especially where a bag is provided for the reception of the pommel.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described riding-habit, the same being composed of two piecesA and B, a side IOO provided with :i single dart h, substantially 1o as set forth.
