UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK L. MOORE, OF OHATHAM, NEW JERSEY.
STRAP-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,024, dated June 26, 1894.
' Application filed December 6, I893- Serial No. 492,824. (No model.)
- provide straps for boxes, trunks, &c.-, with fasteners whereby the straps may be more easily and conveniently fastened and unfastened than by the mere buckles in common use.
The invention consists in general of novel means for tightenin g the strap, as after buckllng, and for loosening the strap preparatory to unbuckling, substantially as will be herein- I after described and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawlngs, forming part of this specification, 1n'which- Figure 1 represents in plan view the ends of a strap provided with a fastener embodying my lnvention, parts however being omitted. F gs. 2, 3 and 4 are longitudinal, sectional views of the same showing the steps taken in fastening the ends of the strap together. Fig. 5 1s a plan View showing the ends fastened. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing another form of my fastener, and Figs. 7, 8 and 9 are various views. showing the steps in operating this form of fastener. Figs. 10,11 and 12 illustrate a third modification, being only slightly difi erent from that shown in Figs. 1 to 5.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the various figures.
In all the figures A and B, designate separate ends or parts of an ordinary strap.
The essential feature of my invention conslsts of a rigid lever, designated as O in all the figures, which I prefer to form with two parallel side arms, rigidly connected by end cross-bars C and 0 respectively, and by a medial cross-bar 0 all of cast or forged metal. I connect the end-bar C of the lever with one end or part A of the strap, and the medial bar 0 with the other end or part B of the strap, as will be hereinafter fully described, so that by swinging the free end of the lever O'over upon the end or part A, the ends or parts A, B, can be drawn together and the strap tightened with but little exertion, and byreturning the lever O, the strap as easily loosened;
Means hereinafter described are provided for This tightener and loosen'er 1s by me designed for use in connection with a buckle, so that the strap need first be buckled taut only, and can then be fastened tight with but little exertion by means of the lever, while the strap can be as easily unfastened by first releasing and returning the lever so as to take the strain off the strap and then unbuckling it.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the end bar 0 of the lever O is attached to one end A of the strap, and a buckle D is hinged on the medial cross-bar 0 for connection with the free end B of the .ers E, F, to receive closely between them the transverse bar 0 of the lever G, as shown in Fig. 4, and then pass the free end or tongue B of the strap lengthwise through said keepers E, F, over said end bar 0 thereby securely fastening the lever O to the strap, and enabling it to be quickly freed and the strap loosened by simply withdrawing said end or tongue B from the keepers E, F.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9, the buckle D is formed by hinging the buckle pin 01 to the end bar 0 so that its end will bear upon the medial bar 0 of the lever, and therefore be turned back with said lever when swung over as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9. In this case thelever G will tighten the strap the distance only between the end bar (3 and the medial bar 0 In Figs. 10, 11 and 12, the arrangement is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 5, save that there is mounted on the part A a slip H having a rigid tongue H, to pass through the keepers E, F, over the lever end-bar 0 outside the flexible tongue or end B, to prevent said flexible tongue or end B from being with-- drawn from the keepers E,F by the strain on said end bar 0 It is evident that my invention may be practiced in various other ways Without departing from its true scope and spirit.
I claim-- 1. The combination, with a strap, of a lever O, to one end of which an end A of the strap is attached, a buckle of the character described attached to said lever medially to fasten any point of the free end B of the strap thereto, and a fastening device on the strap end A to secure the free end of the lever C thereto, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination,with a strap, of alever O to one end of which an end A of the strap is attached, a buckle attached to said lever 0 medially, through and to which buckle the free end of the strap is passed and fastened and a keeper on the end A of the strap through which the free end of the strap is tucked, and by which the free end of the lever G is retained, substantially as described.
3. The combined strap fastener and tightener herein described, which consists of a lever O having the strap-attaching pivot 0 a self fastening end 0 and a strap-buckle D attached to the lever part-way between the strap-pivot O and the end 0 FRANK L. MOORE.
