ANDREW, a. GRAHAM cu nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn 4 c.
WILLIAM CHARLES FRINDELL, OF WEYBURN, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
SLEIGH-BELL FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1909.
Application filed April 25, 1908. Serial No. 429,293.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CHARLES FRINDELL, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at VVeyburn, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleigh-Bell Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in sleigh bells and fastening devices therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved means for fastening a string of bells to a harness to prevent them from drop ping off and being lost should the usual buckle or fastening become loose.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and. claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my invention to the back band or strap of a harness Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved fastoning devicc, parts being in section; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
In the drawings 1 denotes the back band or strap of a harness and 2 denotes an ordinary string of sleigh bells consisting of bells 3 of any suitable form and construction arranged. at intervals upon a strap adapted to be passed around. the body of an animal and to have its ends connected by a buckle 4 or any other suitable fastening that may be readily detached to permit of the removal of the device.
In order to prevent the string of bells from dropping off of the animal and becoming lost should the buckle or fastening 4 work loose, and to further prevent the string from shifting both longitudinally and transversely upon the back band I provide a fastening strap 5 which is adapted to have one of its ends fixed to the strap or string 2 and its other end detachably secured thereto and which is adapted to receive the back band 1 between it and the adjacent portion of the bell strap 2. As illustrated, the fastening strap 5 is arranged centrally upon the top of the strap 2 and has one of its ends sewed, as shown at 6, or otherwise permanently secured. Its other or free end is reduced to provide a tongue 7 adapted to be passed under a keeper loop 8 and formed with a button hole or opening 9 to receive a button 10 on the strap 2. The keeper 8 is in the form of a transversely disposed strap having its ends sewed or otherwise secured to the strap 2 adj acent to the edges of the latter, and the button 10 is preferably riveted in the strap 2 and has a head at its top to retain the tongue 7 upon it. On the fastening strap 5 I preferably provide one or more bells 11 which are similar to the bells 3.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention permits the string of bells to be quickly and easily attached to the harness so that it cannot shift and cannot drop off and become lost should its usual fastening buckle or device 4 work loose.
The invention dispenses with the necessity of tape, cord, or other extraneous fastening devices usually employed for securing the string of bells to the harness and. enables the bells to be more quickly and securely fastened than is possible by such extraneous fastening means.
While I have shown and described my invention as especially adapted for securing the string of bells to the back band or strap of the harness it will be seen that it may be employed for securing the same to other portions of the harness.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. The combination with a string of sleigh hells, of a fastening strap secured at one end to the same and adapted to receive a portion of the harness between it and said string of bells, and means for detachably securing the free end of said fastening strap to the string of bells.
2. The combination with a string of sleigh bells, of a fastening strap secured at one end to the same and adapted to receive a portion of a harness between it and said string of bells, the free end of the fastening strap being formed with a button hole, and a button upon the string of bells to enter said button hole in the fastening strap.
3. The combination of a string of sleigh bells having a strap, bells arranged at intervals upon the latter, means for detachably fastening the ends of the strap after the latter is passed. around the body of an animal, a
fastening strap secured at one of its ends to tening strap and bells upon said fastening the bell strap and having its free end formed strap. 19 with a button hole, said. fastening strap be- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my ing adapted to receive a portion of the harsignature in the presence of two witnesses.
