PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. NUTTER, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUCKLE No. &26,267.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1906.
- Application filed January 23, 1905. Serial No. 242,202.
To all whom it may conccrn;
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. NUTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Buckles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like numerals on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a fastening device in the nature of a buckle or clasp which is capable of general use.
The device is especially useful as a buckle, and when used in this way it is positive and automatic in its action.
The device is herein shown as used on a strap which is to be buckled around a roll or package, and when used in this way the tightening of the buckle or strap brings the tail of the locking member against the material being wrapped, and thus throws the biting elgle e Construction is such that the tighter the strap is pulled the more firmly will the biting edge be thrown against said strap, thereby to prevent it from being withdrawn from the buckle.
The drawings illustrate one embodment of 'my invention, and the claims point out the novel features thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a roll having around it a strap or band with my improved fastening deVice secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my fastening device. Fig. 3 is a central section through the fastening device with the locking member released and in the position it occupi es while the strap or band is being drawn tight. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the strap or band drawn tight and in locking position.
The device comprises a main body portion 3, herein shown as in the form of a plate having a slot 4 to receive one end of a strap or band, if the device is used in connection with a strap or band, or to receive the tongue or equivalent part of the member to be fastened.
As one simple way of using my invention I have herein shown it as secured to a band or strap 5, which is adapted to be buckled around the article to be secured. When used in this way, the end 6 of said strap or band is inserted through the slot 4 of the buckle, as shown. in Figs. 1, 3, and 4. In the embodment of my invention shown in said figures the plate 3 is secured to the other end of said strap in any suitable way, and as one convenient means to this end the strap is provided with a metallic member 7, which embraces the end of the strap and passes through a slot' The head 10 is provided with the biting edge 13 and is made slightly longer than the slot through which the locking member is inserted, thereby forming shoulders 14 at the ends of the head, which overlie and engage 'the material of the plate 3 and prevent the locking member from becoming disengaged from said plate. In using my improved fastening device when thus Secured to a strap said strap is placed around the package or the material to be Secured with the side of the fastening devce on which is located the tail ll adjacent said package, and the end 6 of the strap is then drawn through the slot 4 to tighten the strap about the ackage. During this operation the tail 11 s brought into engagement 'With the package, as shown in Fig. 4, thereby to throw'the biting edge 13 against the strap 6 as itemerges from the slot 4.
It will be noted that the ofiset portion 12 of the locking member stands at an inclination to the tail portion 11. The reason for this Construction is to cause the biting edge to more firmly grip the strap as the latter is pulled tight, for it will be observed that when the strap is drawn tight around the bundle or package the pressure of said bundle or package against the tail12 not only rocks the lock ing member from the position in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4, thereby to throw the biting edge 13 against the strap, but also moves the locking member bodily trans versely with reference to the plate until the tail portion engages either said plate or the strap 5, as shown in Fig. 4. During this transverse movement of. the locking member through the slot 8 the inclined offset portion 12 by its engagement with the edge of the slot crowds the locking member forward slightly, thereby causing the-biting edge to grip the strap still more firmly. The tighter IOO IIO
the strap is drawn, therefore, the more seourely Will the biting edge 13 be forced against the strap, as will be obvious.
From the above it will be apparent that the looking member has both a swingig movement relative to the plate and also a movement longitudinally thereof and that as the strap is tightened the looking member first has a swinging movement to carry the biting edge against the strap and then has a movement longitudinally of the plate, thereby to crowd the biting edge more iirmly against the strap. It will thus be seen that to use the fastening devioe as a buokle it is merely necessary to tighten the strap 6, this act of itself causing the buckle to seourely grip the strap.
In the form of the invention above described one end of the strap 5is secured directly to the plate 3.
I have herein shown my devioe as attached to or forming part of a seouring-strap 6; but it is obvious that it may be used in other ways and may take the place of any ordinary buckle now in common use. I do not wish to limit the invention to use in connection with a strap therefore.
Various changes in the Construction and arrangement of the devioe maybe made without departng from the invention.
i Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fastening devioe, a band or strap, a plate Secured to one end thereof, said plate being slotted to receive the other end ol" the band or strap, and a looking member associated with said plate but disconnected from the strap, said looking member having a head located on the outside of the plate and provided with a biting edge to grip the band or strap, and a tail situated on the other side of said plate and overlapping the band orstrap, whereby the drawing oi' the band or strap through the slot to tighten the buckle brings the tail against the material or package being secured and causes the biting edge of the locking member to grip said band or strap.
2. A fastening devioe comprising a band or strap, a plate slotted to receive said band or strap, and a looking member loosely connected with said plate but disconnected from the band or strap, said looking member having a head provided with a biting edge to engage gitudinally of the plate toward the slot there-1 in as the band is tightened, whereby the biting edge is forced more firmly against said band.
3. A fastening devioe comprising a band or strap, a plate slotted to receive said band or strap, and a looking member disconnected 'from the band and assooiated with said plate and capable of a swinging movement thereon and also a movement longitudinally thereof, said looking member having a head situated on the outside of the plate and provided with a biting edge to grip the band or strap, and a' tail portion situated on the inside of the plate and adapted to engage the material being seoured, the engagement of said tail portion With said material as the band is tightened causing the looking member first to rock relatively to the plate thereby to bring the biting edge against the band, and thereafter to move longitudinally of the plate toward the slot to grip the band still more firmly.
4. In a fastening devioe, a plate having two parallel Slots, a band or strap Secured at one end to said plate, and a looking member eXtending through one of the Slots, said looking member having a head situated on the outside oi' the plate and provided with a biting edge to grip the band or strap, an inclined oil'set portion eXtending through the slot in the plate, and a tail portion projecting rearwardly from the oflset portion and lying on the inside of the plate and the band connected thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speoifioation in the presence of two subsoribing witnesses.
CHAS. P. NUTTER.
