Description

M. M. DEEM.
LAMP
(No Model.)
Patented Nov. 21, 1893..
1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MILLER M. DEEM, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,206, dated November 21, 1893.
Application filed February 6 1893- To all whom it may concern: 7 Be it known that I, MILLER M. DEEM,a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to the ornamental bowl or head which incloses and directly supports the oil vessels upon lamps, and it consists in the peculiar construction of the same hereinafter described the main feature of which is the formation of the bowl in separate sections which are bound together by means of an independent cap piece for the supporting standard or stem.
The main object of the invention is to permit the head to be made of cast iron in easily molded sections with open work ornamentation and the sections to be cheaply and firmly united without brazing or soldering to form an apparently single piece.
In the accompanying drawings Figure I is a sectional elevation of my improved head secured to the end of the standard or sup porting stem of a lamp. Fig. 2 is a separate view of the cap piece or plate which serves to bind the sections of the bowl together and secure it to the standard.
The bowl A as shown is cast in three separate sections a each made from the same pattern and arranged to abut at their edges in vertical radial planes and thereby form a bowl of spherical shape with top and bottom openings e and e bounded by solid bands I) and c. The portion of the castings between these bands is provided with open work ornamentation into which the parting lines of the sections is blended so as to make the whole appear like a single piece. An exterior circular flange d surrounds the bottom opening 6', which is formed with inwardly projecting shoulders or lugs f.
The separate bowl sections are bound together and secured to the supporting stem or standard by means of a cap-piece or plate 11. This plate is of circular form and is provided with a flange h which encircles the flanges (l of the bowl sections, and with a central hub 70, which is represented as screw threaded at the lower portion to secure it to the top of the standard G, and at the upper portion to reserin No. 461,111; (No model.)
ceive a screwm by means of which the bowl sections are firmly clamped to the plate; a washer N, which rests upon the shoulders f, being interposed, and the plate being provided with lugs or teats n which by contact with the shoulders f prevent the plate from turning upon the bowl sections.
Though the sections a a are firmly bound together by means of the plate H as described yet it is preferable to securea proper meeting of the sections at. the upper band I) that additional fastening means should be provided at the junctions and I employ strips 19 which are riveted to two adjoining sections as shown and serve to insure a symmetrical and solid connection of the parts.
By means of the improved construction I am enabled to make the bowl in any convenient number of sections which are firmly and cheaply united without brazing or soldering whether in cast iron or other material while at the same time the integral appearance of the bowl is perfectly maintained.
As the described construction may be easily varied in unessential matters I do not limit myself to the exact details shown, but
What I claim is 1. A lamp head consisting of a bowl portion formed of separate sections arranged to form a bottom opening with inwardly projecting shoulders f and an exterior circular flange d a plate or cap I-I encircling said flange and a washerN and a clamping screw engaging the hub of the connecting plate or cap, substantially as set forth.
2. A lamp head consisting of a bowl portion formed of separate sections arranged to form a bottom opening with inwardly projecting shoulders f and an exterior circular flange d a plate or cap H encircling said flange and provided with means as lugs n, to prevent rotation of the cap upon the bowl sections and a washer N and clamping screw engaging the screw threaded hub of the connecting plate or cap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MILLER M. DEEM.
