E. W. MERSEREAU.
SPRING. GOVER.
No. 496,979. Patented May 9, 1893'.
WlTNESSES: INVENTOR WM i i- PETEN5 w, wom'urna. wAsumo-mu, u c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR W. MERSEREAU, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SPRING-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 496,979, dated May 9, 1893.
Application filed March 3, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR W. MERSEREAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers of the class wherein a flexible top is upheld by a spring the object of the invention being to improve the general construction of such covers and to so connect the parts that the spring shall be supported from the cover, forming therewith a single complete structure, which can be readily removed from and replaced upon the box or casein connection with which it is employed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification I have illustrated my improved cover as it would appear when employed in connection with an insect powder gun but I desire it to be understood that the cover could be employed in many other ways.
In the drawings referred to Figure 1 is a cross sectional View of the cover and box the View being taken on a line corresponding with the line 1, 1, of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a similar view on aline corresponding with theline 2, 2, of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of the cover.
In constructing the cover forming the subject matter of this application I prefer to employ two metal disks 10 and 1], that are riveted together or otherwise connected, and between which there is held a piece of cloth, leather, rubber or similar flexible material 12, which constitutes the top of the cover The outer edge of the flexible top 12 is clamped between a ring 13 and a rim 14, the rim 14 being flanged over the upper edge of the ring 13 as shown. The ring 13 is adapted Serial No. 423,574. (No model.)
to engage the body of the box or receptacle in connection with which the cover is to be employed, and is provided with a spring support or seat, which in the specific construction illustrated consists of depending arms 3 that have looped lower ends to receive the lower coil of the spring 15, the head of the spring resting against the inside of the cover, bearing directly upon the disk 11 which by preference is flanged to prevent any side movement of the spring head.
To prevent the turning of the spring and its consequent displacement from its seat I form a shallow loop 4 near the lower end of the wire from which the spring is formed, and in adjusting the spring to position I bring one of the arms 3 within said loop.
Although I prefer to loop the spring wire as set forth in the last paragraph such looping is not by any means an essential feature of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a cover the combination of the following elements, viz; a vertical ring adapted to engage on a box body and having formed integral therewith downwardly extending arms which constitute a spring support, a binding rim curved over the substantially horizontal top part of said ring, a flexible cover having its edge bound between the top of said ring and said binding rim, and aspiral spring the base whereof is seated in said spring supports and the head whereof bears against the inside of said cover.
EDGAR W. MERSEREAU.
