No. 462,523, Patented Nov. 3, 1891.

UNrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDXVIN M. BAKER, OF CRAYON, OHIO.
FENCE-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,523, dated November 3, 1891.
Application filed July 3, 1891. Serial No. 398,347- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crayon, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and usef ul Improvement in Fence-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for twisting wires in building that class of fences formed of wire and pickets, the strands of wire being twisted between the respective pickets.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of simple construction, capable of easy and ready adjustment and operation, the parts being so constructed that the twisting jaws may be adjusted with reference to each other to accommodate it to different fences, in which more or less space is used between the pickets forming the fence.
My invention consists in the various constructions and combinations of parts, hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of a fence and my device applied thereto as in operation. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Like parts are indicated by similar letters of reference in the several views.
In forming my improved device I employ two side platesa and a, each of which is constructed with a slotted jaw or opening a Between the respective side plates a and a is pivoted an operating rod or lever 19, provided at its outer extremity with a handle I), the said rod or lever being pivoted by an adj ustable bolt or rod 0, which passes through the inner extremity of said rod and through the respective side plates at the ends thereof opposite to the opening in the respective jaws o The outer extremities of the respective side plates are preferably beveled or rounded, as shown at a and are connected together by an adjustable connection which extends through the respective parts so as to clamp the same together, ordinary screw-threaded bolts 0 and 0' being used for this purpose at the two ends of the plates.
To provideforadjustin the width between the respective jaws ct and a I provide between the respective side plates at the ends a a series of washers (Z, and between the respective side plates and the rod 1) at the opposite end similar washers d.
In operation the pickets are inserted between the strands of wire which form the supports therefor, as indicated in Fig. 1. The respective wires on opposite sides of the picket are placed in the jaws (t of the re spective side plates-in the position indicated in Fig. 1. By drawing on therod Z) the side plates a and a are caused to turn until a half revolution thereof is produced, thus twisting the two wires correspondingly. An opposite movement of the rod 1) at a slightlydifferent vertical angle causes the plates (2. to revolve the balance of the revolution until the parts are reversed or in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, thus producing a complete revolution of the twisting jaws a and twisting the strands of wire on opposite sides of said jaws and against the pickets.
By having the plates a and a and the twisting-jaws therein formed independent of each other and adjustable with reference to each other, as described, the parts may be adjusted to correspond to any desired space between the pickets, so that the twisting of the strands shall occur in close proximity to the said pickets and thus bind said pickets securely, whetherthey be close together or widely separated, as desired.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a twisting device, as described, the side plates each having twisting-jaws, as described, a pivoted handle connected to one end of each of said plates, and means for connecting said plates adjustably together, so that the twisting-jaws maybe more or less separated, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the side plates having thetwisting-jaws, of a pivoted operata series of interposed washers, substantially ing rod or lever arranged between said side as specified. I 0 plates at one end thereof, a screw-threaded In testimony whereof I have hereunto set connecting-bolt passing through said plates my hand this 27th day of June, A. D. 1891.

rod and plates, said jaws being connected to- Witnesses: gether at the opposite end by ascrew-threaded S. J. BARGER,
bolt or rod through the respective plates, and 1 PETER BAKER.
