UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUOIAN A. OUSSINS AND JOHN M. OVERPEOK, OF NEW PARIS, OHIO.
WRENCH FOR TWISTING WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,659, dated March 23, 1886.
Application filed December 4, 1885. Serial No. 184,667.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that we, LUOIAN A. CUssINs and JOHN M. OVERPECK, citizens of the United States, residing at New Paris, in the county of Preble, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in NVrenches for Twisting Wires, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Ourinvention relates to that class of wrenches used in twisting wires together.
Our invention consists in a metal body of oblong form, having an open slot in its central portion, and provided with diverging arms to which handles are affixed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the wires to be twisted together in position. Fig. 3 is a detail in section of one of the arms a and its handle d.
In Fig. 1, a represents a body formed of metal plate, attached to which at each corner are arms a a a a, to each of which are affixed handles (1 d d d. An open slot, 1), is made in the body a for more than half its length, the width of which is sufficient to admit the entrance of wires 0 0.
hen two parallel wires are stretched, preparatory to placing pickets between them to be made into a fence, the wrench is held in a position to make the slot 1) horizontal when it is passed over the wires 0 c, and the operator, by means of the handles d cl, turns the wrench sidewise toward him, producing the twist c, as shown in Fig. 2.
The handles (2 d are preferably constructed (No model.)
of wood for convenience of manipulation, and, being a poor conductor of heat, to enable the wrench to be conveniently used in cold weather Without becoming unnecessarily painful to the hands.
In twisting two wires together they are at equal distances from the center of the wrench and from the center of motion, and as successive twists are made the wires slide in the slot toward each other until the twist is perfected, when the wrench is removed.
The body a is constructed so as to taper edgewise from the solid end to the open end, as shown in Fig. 2, to allow the twisted wire to pass more readily out of the slot b.
111' Fig. 3 we have represented in section a view showing one of the handles d rigidly secured to a tang formed on one of the arms a, which is done by simply driving the handle on its tang.
Having thus fully described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wrench composed of the body a, arms a a a a, handles (1 d d d, and slot 1), constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
LUOIAN A. OUSSINS. JOHN M. OVERPEOK.
