J. L. BRAEFETT.
DEVICE EOE TWISTING FENCE WIRES. No. 360,084. Patented Mar. 29, 1887..
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. BRAFFETT, OF NElV PARIS, OIIIO.
DEVICE FOR TWISTING FENCE-WIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.360,084,dated March 29, 1857.
Application filed August 7, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. BRAFFETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Paris, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Twistng Fence- XVires; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawings is a perspective view of myimproved device for twisting fencewires, and shows a series of fence-pickets and wire strands with the device in position for use, and Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof', partly in section.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a simple and convenient device for twisti ng the strands ofwire between the pickets of this class et' fences, to hold the pickets in position, which object I attain by the construction substantially as shown inthe drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents four lever-handles of any desirable forni and construction, which are suitably connected together at or near their center. Each pair of these handles is preferably formed of a continuous piece of metal or wood. One of the pairs has'seeured to it a bearing-plate, a, for the wire strands b c, and immediately above or over the bearing-plate is an adjustable jaw, B, which slides up and down en one of the lever-handles, and is brought down firmly by means of au eccentric lever, O, and by turning the device through the medium of the handles A the wire strands are twisted together between the wire pickets D, the jaw B holding the strands firmly together. The adj ustability of the jaw B admits of any size wire strands being used, the twisting thereof, as should be understood, being in advance of each picket, the jaw also preventing the device from slipping away from the twist and making a tight Serial No. 210,839. (No nicdel.)
and solid twist around the picket. The space between the jaw and handles for the reception `of the wire strands is regulated by means of a gage-screw, e, and the space between each picket, or theleugth ofthe twistin the strands, is regulated by means of a spacer, E, consisting, preferably, of a screw, whereby it is rendered adjustable. Thetwistin the wire strands having been made by the device herein described, said device is moved forward on t-he strands to enable a picket to be inserted between the device and the twisted portion of the strand, after which the device is brought back with some force, the spacer E striking against the picket. TheA latter is brought snuglyiu position against the last twist made, and at the same time holds thetwisting device the right distance from the picket to begin the twist. By properly adjusting the spacer E the pickets are regularly and evenly secured at any desired distance apart.
The cam'lever 0 jaw B, bearing-plate (l, screw e, and spacer E may all be detached from the handles when worn, or required to be renewed, by substituting others therefor.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wire-twisting device consisting of suitable lever-handles and a slidingjaw and canr lever for operating the same to hold the wire strands while being twisted, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Awire-twisting device consisting of suitable lever-handles, a sliding jawand means for operating it, a gage for the jaw, and aspacer to regulate the distance between the pickets, substantially and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES L. BRAFFE'FT.
