J. M. LARKIN. BAND TIE FOR COTTON BALES.
No. 461,530. T Patented Oct. 20, 1891.
%.Z% E5555- I 5 1 #5 aamyifizt 1 UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE 7 JOHN M. LARKIN, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
BAN D-TIE FOR COTTON-BA LES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,530, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed July 24, 1891. Serial Ito 400,564. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. LARKIN,a citizen of the United States of America, residing atMemphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Ties for Cotton-Bales, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. I
My invention relates to improvements in the metal tie or buckle by which the band or hoop is secured when placed around a cotton-bale.
My invention consists in giving a convex form to the bearings of the slots or openings of a metal band-tie and the particular position given to the ear or elevated point, which is to prevent the band from slipping out of the open slot.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the tie. Fig. 2 is a plan to show the bands inserted in the slots.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both figures.
A refers to the body of the tie; B, to the lower part as thickened to give strength; 0, to the closed slot with its convex bearing; D, to the open slot with convex bearing; E, the bar which separates the two slots; F, the ear or elevated point, which prevents the fastened band from slipping out of the open slot, and G G the ends of the bands as received into the slots. I i
The advantage claimed for this tie over others is that the convex bearings of the slots bring the strain on thecenter of the band and give it firmest hold under pressure, and the point or ear being placed on theouter edge of the under surface, instead of in the slot, gives better security against slipping and greater ease in manipulating the band.
' My invention is operated as any other tie of a like kind. The cotton-bale being of plantation size or compressed and the band or hoop put in place and tightened by any process, one end of the band is passed through the closed' slot of the tie and fastened, and the otherend of the band islooped and brought to the tie, slipped into the open slot, and fastened behind the ear or catch. All the bands of a bale being thus tied, the bale is released from the press, when the reaction of the cotton will draw the bands into immovable hold on the tie.
VVhat'I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved bale-band tie formed of a single piece of metal having a curved closed slot at one side of the tie and a curved open slot at the other side of the tie, the convex side of the curve turned outward to receive the band and having an ear or shoulder bent downward at the extremity of the open bar, as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
' J. M. LARKIN.
Witnesses:
