Description

1. W. PARISH.
Bale-Ties.
No.15088v5, Patented Maj/12.1874.
UNITED STATES JOEL WV. PARISH, OF MCFARLANDS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO` PATENT OIEEIGE J OHN O. BRAGG, OF BRIOKLAND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specilicaton forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 150,885, dated May 12, 1874; application iih d April 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL IV. PARIS, ot' Mc- Farlands, in the county of Lunenburg and State of Virginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construetion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part ot' this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation ot' a perspective view of my bale-tie, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the saine, Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
This invention has relation to ties for fastening hoops around bales of cotton, hay, and other substances 5 and it consists in combining with rectangular links, which are attached to the ends of a bale, a lockingllever, which is looped around a cross-bar ot' one ot the said links, and drawn backover a cross-bar ofthe other link and fastened by a slide, thus producing a tiewhich can be easily unlocked without compressing the bale,or breaking the band or tie, and Which can be used repeatedly, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A A' designate rectan gular links, which can be readily stamped out of sheet metal by machinery adapted to the purpose, or which may be made of cast metal. `The link A is attached to 011e end, B, of the bale-hoop by bending-this end around one of the cross-bars of the link and confinin g it by a clasp, D, or other suitable means. The
link A is also confined to the opposite end B of the band by bending the end of this band around one of the cross-hars ot the link, and using a clasp, D', to conline the same. O desi gnates a piece ot' band metal4 ot' suitable length, which is bent around one ot' the crossbars of the link A', and its ends brought to= geth'er so as to form a lever, by which the two, links A A can be forcibly drawn together, so, as to lie one upon the other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. the lever O through the link A, and drawing', this lever back against a cross-bar of this link, until the two links and the lever are caused. to assume the position shown in Figs. l and 2. The parts are then firmly secured by slippingthe slide D over the ends ot` the lever. The strain caused by the expansion of the bale will be received on the lever O in close relation to that part of it which embraces the cross-bar ot' the link A, consequently there is no liability of parts becoming casually unt'astened.
What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tie for cotton-bales and other analogous purposes, consisting ofthe links A A', the lever O, and the slides and bale-band, combined in the manner described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOEL WASHINGTON PARISH. Witnesses:
H. G. OLAMPITT, C. HoYT.
