Description
marmi)A STATES PATENT OFFICE.;
HARRY H. MOORE, OF VIOKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters'Pmatent No.' 184,650, dated November 2K1, 1876 application filed July 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY H. MOORE, of Vicksburg, Mississippi', have invented certainv new and useful linprovenient in Bale- Ties, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specitcation, in which- Figure l represents a plan View of my de.- vice. Fig. 2 shows the parts separated. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.
l`his invention relates to that cla-ss of baleties in which the end of the band is provided with a wedge-shaped enlargement, that when in use is slipped into a slide, the inside of which presents the same angle as that of the wedge. When vthe strain comes upon the band it draws the wedge end tightly against the other end of the band that rests iiatly against the wedge side of said slide, and thus holds it securely in place. Thus, the more strain that is brought to bear upon the band, the tighter the said wedge is held against the inside of the slide.
The object of my invention is to render the working loose of bale-band ties impossible under' all. circumstances, and at the same time to facilitate the fastening of the same to the bale, and with but very little slack. This I fully accomplish by providing one end ot' the band D with a wedge-shaped enlargement, E, which, when in use, is slipped into a metallic slide, B, the inside of which corresponds with the angle ot' the wedge. The other end of the band rests between the angle side of the slide and wedge, ,as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and is thus retained Very securely in place.l
I make the enlargement E either of thesame piece or of a separate piece, properly secured to the tie closely from point to point, so as to present substantially an enlargement of the tie-band. I also make the slide just of sufficient length to cover the enlargement when forced home by the outward expansion of the bale.
I am aware that it is not new to attach a wedge to a bale-band, as shown in the Patent to A. A. Goldsmith, No.'149,468, April 7, 1874, and therefore 1 do not claim, broadly, a wedgeshaped enlargement on a haletie.
In a bale-tie thus constructed no exact calculation has to be made as to the necessary length of the band to secure the bale, but the band is pulled through the slide after the bale is pressed until it is tightened, and when tightened there can be but little expansion, as the pressure'forces the wedge into the slide, which, being also wedge-shaped, holds the band as placed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bale-tie constructed as described, and consisting of the band D, provided with a smooth wedge-shaped enlargement, E, lying close to the band the whole length of the enlargement, in combination ot` a slide, B, having an inside opening to correspond with the angle of the enlargement, Aand of sufficient width to cover the same, substantially as set forth.
HARRY HICKS MOORE.
