UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
THEODORE BURDIOK, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
WOVEN-WIRE MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,712, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed September 18, 1890. Serial No. 3651385. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDoRE BUEDICK, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VoVen-Wire Mattresses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in woven-wire mattresses; and it consists in the various novel details of construction of a mattress-support, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, illustrated in the drawings, and the more particular points pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated one form of device embodying the essential features of my invention, although the same may be carried into effect in other ways without in the least departing from the spirit thereof, and in these drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a completed mattress, showing the supports beneath the same and the mechanism for tightening or loosening the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, showing more particularly the connection between the mattress proper and the support; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the tightening device.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the side pieces of the frame, 3 and 4 the end pieces, and 5 and 6 supplemental end pieces, between which and the end pieces proper the mattress 7 is securely clamped. Beneath the mattress are arranged the supports 8, which are constructed, preferably, of woven wire, and are of any desired width, the ends of said supports being clamped between blocks or plates 9 and 10, carried by anglebolts 11, which bolts extend through the said plates and carry on their inner ends nuts 12, adapted to bear against the plates and thus tighten or loosen the supports. The outer ends of the bolts are formed or bent, as shown at 13, so as to embrace the supplemental end pieces, where the latter are of a width to fit between the bent portion; but when the end pieces are too wide the bolts are let into the same, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Upon each of the supports are secured two or more blocks or plates 14, which carry S-shaped spiral springs 15, adapted to contact with the under side of the mattress proper, as shown in Fig. 2 at 16.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings, the operation of my device will be apparent. It will be seen that by increasing or diminishing the tension of the supports 8 the mattress proper may be adjusted to sustain persons of various weights and admit of their bodies lying in the same plane, which could not be accomplished with a mattress of the ordinary construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a wire mattress, a frame consisting of side pieces, end pieces secured thereto, supplemental end pieces, and a mattress secured between the said end pieces and supplemental end pieces, in combination with a series of f angle-bolts at each end of 'the frame, one end of each of which bolts engages the outer portion of the supplemental end pieces, plates carried by the inner portion of the said bolts, woven-wire supports secured between the said plates and extending below the mattress, blocks carried by the said supports, S-shaped springs carried by the blocks and bearing against the under side of the mattress, and nuts carried by the angle-bolts and bearing against the inner sides of the plates, whereby the tension of the wire supports may be regulated as desired.
.In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE BURDIOK.
