To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN HUDRY, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sp-ring Bed- Bottoms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide a spring bed 'bottom of simple, economical and durable construction, for use in connection with bedsteads, cribs, or other similar articles of furniture.

The invention consists in a bed bottom constructed of a series of spaced longitudinal and transverse strips of thin sheet metal placed one upon the other and provided at their crossings with complemental slots and lugs for securing said strips together, all substantially as I will proceed now to set forth and finally claim.

The bed bottom of the present invention, is designed to be supported in a frame of any suitable or approved construction, and as shown in Fig. l, such a frame may comprise side rails 1 and end rails 2, and corner fastenings 3 for engaging complemental fastenings on the head and foot of the bed.

The bed bottom proper comprises the longitudinal strips 4, of thin, Hat, sheet metal, suitably spaced apart and having at suitably spaced intervals throughout their length, slots 5, preferably rectangular in shape, punched or cut therethrough, and provided at their opposite ends With eyes or openings 6, and transverse strips 7, of similar material, placed upon said longitudinal strips over the slots 5 therein, and.

having punched or out out portions or lugs 8 coinciding with said slots 5, and adapted to be bent down through the slots and then bent upwardly against the underside ofthe longitudinal strips 4, as shown more clearly in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, thus securely locking the strips 4 and 7 together at their crossings. Preferably, the opposite ends 9 of the transverse strips 7 are bent around the outer edges of the outer longitudinal strips 4, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. 'Ihe bed bottom as thus constructed is supported in the frame l, 2, by coiled springs 10 having their terminals connected with the eyes 6 in the ends of the longitudinal strips 4 and with the end rails 2 of the frame. Any other suitable sp-ring connections may be used for connecting and supporting the bottom in the frame instead of the coiled springs as herein shown. v

I have herein 'shown the slots 5 in the longitudinal strips and complemental cut out portions- 8 ofthe transverse strips for engaging said slots, oblong in shape, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting the invention to this particular shape of such parts, as the same may be constructed of any other suitable, but preferably angular, shape.

What I claim is l. A spring bed bottom, comprising a series of spaced longitudinal strips of4 thin, flat sheet metal and a series of spaced transverse strips of similar material crossing each other and provided with complemental angular slots and integral lugs at the points of crossing, said lugs passing through said slots and bent upon the opposite sides of the strips, to thereby rigidly secure the strips together at their points of crossing.
