0. MUSSINAN, Jr. PENCIL TIP No. 452,499. Patented May 19, 1891.
gin/M4 UNITED STATES PATENT ,OFFICE.
OSCAR MUSSINAN, JR, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO EBERI-IARD FABER, OF SAME PLACE.
PENCIL-TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,499, dated May 19, 1891.
Application filed June '7, 1890- Serial No. 354,551. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, OSCAR MUssINAN, J r., acitizen of the United States, residing at the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Pencil-Tips; andthe following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact'description thereof.
Tubular ends or tips for pencils have heretofore been made of a cylinder of paper glued to the pencil and. having an erasive rubber gluedin the outerend; but thiswas a fixture and not removable or reversible. Reversible tips having an erasive rubber held in one end have-heretofore been made of a'slotted metal cylinder; but the same are too expensive for universal adoption and use in conn ection. with a cheap grade of pencils.
The object of my invention is to make a reversible pencil-tip with an erasive rubber at one end which shall be very cheaply made and can be sold with a pencil at a nominal figure; and in carrying out my invention I make use of a paper cylinder that is sufficiently stiif to maintain its shape, and that is of a size to fit snugly over a pencil, and within and near one end of said paper cylinder I securely fasten a disk or wad of paper or similar material to form a cup, into which an erasive rubber is put and secured by glue or otherwise. This disk or Wad of paper acts to prevent the force applied to the rubber while in use driving the same farther into the cylinder, and it also acts as a stop to the point of the pencil when the tip is used as a pointprotector.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a pencil and a longitudinal sect-ion of my improved tip upon-the end thereof. Fig. 2 isa similar view, but showing the tip as reversed for use as a point-protector, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsection of the tip in enlarged size.
A represents thelead-pencil, and B the tip.
My improved reversible tip is composed of a cylinder or tube a, of paper or similar inexpensive material, rolled up to the desired thickness and size, with the convolutions glued together. A washeror disk I), of one or more layers of heavy softpaper or similar material, is secured around its periphery to the inner surface of the cylinder a, near one end, by gluing the same to place, and a cylindrical block of rubber c is glued into the end of the cylinder into the cup-shaped cavity therein, that is separated from the other part of the tube by the disk or washer b. ,If the rubber 0 were glued in the end of the cylinder and no washer were employed, the rubber would be loosened and forced into the cylinder a by the force applied to it when in use; but by the employment of the washer or disk I), which is secured at its periphery firmly to the interior of the cylinder, a strength is imparted to the parts which renders it impossible to dislodge the rubber end.
In the position shown in Fig. 1 both leadpencil and rubber are ready for use, and in the position shown in Fig. 2 the point of the pencil is protected by the reversal of the tip, in which position'the pencil-can be carriedin the pocket.
I claim as my invention- The combined pencil-tip and removable point-protector formed of a-paper tube having a plug of rubber glued into one end, and a disk of paper secured at the base of the rubber, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 3d day of June, A. D. 1890.
