WATER BACK FOR GAS STOVES.
Patented Nov. 4, 1890.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM II. WIESTER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
WATER-BACK FOR GAS-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,917, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed April I 1890. Serial No. 346,165. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WIESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the citv and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Backs for Gas- Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practice the same.
My invention has relation to certain new improvements in water-backs, designed for use in connection with the ordinary gas, gasoline, or oil stoves; and it consists of the parts and details of construction, as will be hereinafter more fully shown in the drawings and described in the specification.
One of the greatest objections to the use of stoves of the above character consists in the absence of means for heating water for washing or other purposes other than in a vessel placed thereon. Thus it will be observed that one of the most vital features of a stove adapted for cooking purposes is taken away.
My invention contemplates providing a stove of the above character with a movable water-back adapted to heat water in a manner similar to the ordinary kitchen-range.
My invention further consists in so constructing the water-back as to permit of the same being brought directly upon the stove, thereby allowing the water passing therethrough to be exposed to the direct action of the flame. or to allow of its being thrown thereof when desired to use the heat for cooking purposes.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the entire specification and several views of the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary gas-stove,showin g my improved water-back attached thereto, the same being shown as thrown off the stove. Fig. 2 is an end View of Fig. 1 in elevation; Fig. 3, a top plan view showing the waterback in position for heating purposes, and Fig. 4 a detail view showing the water-back cover.
The letter A indicates the ordinary gasstove provided with the usual side extension A. To said stove is attached the ordinary gas pipe and burners. The movable waterback I designate by the letter B, which consists of a series of pipes 0 o, of any number, suitably connected at their ends to one a11- other. The free ends 0 c of the water-back I secure within the couplings d cl, which are secured to the water-pipes C C. Preferably I locate or secure the water-back to the rear portion of the stove; but the location thereof is immaterial. The supply-water pipe is represented by the letter G, and the inlet-pipe leading into the water-boiler, (not shown,) located above or to one side of the stove, by the letter G.
hen the surface of the stove is desired for cooking purposes, the movable back is thrown up oif the stove, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and when required for heating purposes the same is thrown down upon the heating-surface of the stove, so as to allow the pipes to be exposed to the direct flame, as shown in Fig. 3. If so desired, however, the water-back need not be removed from off the stove for cooking, but may be covered or protected by means of the metallic cover D, Fig. 4, and the cooking done directly thereon, However, I prefer, unless it is desired to cook and heat water at the same time, to throw the water-back off the stove when cooking. It is obvious that the water as it flows through the water-back into the boiler becomes highly heated and keeps the water within the boiler continually heated, thus allowing for the use of hot water in connection with the stove.
The advantage of having gas, gasoline, or oil stoves provided with means for heating water contained within a boiler similar to the ordinary kitchen range becomes apparent without specific mentioning.
I am aware that minor changes may be made in the arrangement of parts and details of construction herein shown and described without necessitating a departure from the nature and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination, with a gas, gasoline,
oil, or vapor stove, of a water-back pivotally secured thereto, so as to adapt the same to be raised or lowered for cooking or heating pur poses, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a gas, gasoline, oil, or vapor stove, of the water-supply pipes O C, couplingsd d',secured to the ends thereof, and the movable water-back secured or connected by said couplingsto the supply-pipes and adapted to permit of raising or lowering for cooking or heating purposes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
3. The combination, with a gas, gasoline, oil, or vapor stove, of water-pipes, couplings secured to said pipes, and a Water-back consisting of a series of connected pipes, the end pipes of the series having their ends engaging the couplings, forming a pivotal connection, whereby the water-backs may be brough t to either a horizontal or vertical position, substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination, with a gas, gasoline, vapor, or oil stove, of a water-back pivotally secured thereto, so as to adapt the same to be raised or lowered for cooking or heating purposes, and a cover adapted to fit said water- WILLIAM H. WIESTER.
In presence of N. A. AOKER, PHILo MILLS.
