FRED. W. KEIFEL, JR, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO SCANLAN & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
FIRE-PLACE BACK OR LINING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,732, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed June 3, 1890- Serial No. 354,146. .(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED. W. KEIFEL, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Place Backs or Linings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fire-place backs or linings; and it has for its object, among others, to dispense with bolts and nuts and other like contrivances heretofore employed in mountin g iron backs, portable baskets, stove-linings, and other analogous devices, wherebythe placing of such devices in position is facilitated and the rusting and burning of the bolts and nuts, which rendered it difficult to disconnect the parts when desired, is avoided.
Other objects and advantages of the i nvention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same on the line :1: x of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures of the drawings.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the back piece, which is cast with right-angled extensions a, which are somewhat thickened at.their j unction with the main body of the piece, as shown, and extend for a sufficient distance to form a back-stop for the side pieces. This back piece is also cast with holes I) for the reception of the hooks on the side pieces.
B are the side pieces, which are each cast with hooks c, which project at a substantial right angle thereto, as shown.
In practicetheparts are assembled as shown in the drawings, thus greatly simplifying the mounting of backs and linings, and the sides are firmly held to the back. The extensions to are preferably reduced in thickness at the points where the hooks come in contact with the same, as shown in Fig. 1, to provide a seat for the backs of the hooks and form a more firm bearing and hold therefor. The hooks bear against the back of the back piece, as shown in Fig. 2, and with outward pressure on the inner sides of the side pieces and more securely hold the parts in place. The rears of the hooks at their junction with the main body of the side pieces are rounded, as shown at d, to facilitate the insertion and removal of the side pieces.
What I claim as new is 1. The combination, with the back piec cast with right-angled extensions and holes, of the side pieces cast with hooks adapted to engage said holes, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the back piece cast with holes and extensions reduced in thickness at said holes, of the side pieces cast with hooks adapted to engage said holes with their backs resting in the seat formed in the extensions, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the back piece cast with holes and extensions a, thickened at the junction of the two, of the side pieces cast with hooks rounded at their junction with the body of the side pieces, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED. W. KEIFEL, JR,
Witnesses:
