PATENT OFFICE.
HILLIE C. PATTON AND CHALMERS A. SCROGGS, OF TELLALA, ARKANSAS.
FIRE-DOG OR AN DIRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,745, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed April 22, 1904. Serial No. 204,410.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HILLIE C. PATTON and GHALMERs A. Souoees, citizens of the United States, residing at Tellala, in the county of Prairie and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Dogs or Andirons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fire-dogs, commonly designated as andirons. It has for its objects to render the same adjustable, to provide a fender adapted to prevent the accidental outward escape of burninglogs, and to provide a removable support for holding a heating vessel.
With these ends in View our invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described.
In order that those skilled in the art to which our invention appertains may know how to make and use the same and fully appreciate its advantages, we will proceed to describe the construction and arrangement of the several parts, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of firedogs embodying the features of our invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a removable shelf or support.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
1 represents the two horizontal log-supports terminating at the front and rear ends in vertical legs 2,preferably formed integral with the supporting-bars l, or they may be made separate and secured thereto in any suitable manner. The log-supporting bars 1 also extend upwardly at their forward ends, as shown at 3, and thence horizontally, as shown at 4, (see Fig. 2,) the ends being beveled, as clearly shown, and having at or near their extremi ties horizontal lugs 55, adapted to embrace the top and bottom surfaces of the opposite part 4%. Each of the portions 4: is also formed with a longitudinal slot 6, (see Fig. 1,) adapted to receive a suitable bolt 7, which is secured in place by a nut 8, and when the parts are thus secured together the bars 1 are held rigidly in proper parallelism and may be adjusted to and from one another in an obvious manner.
9 is a frame of any ornamental design to bridge the space between the front legs 2 and to constitute a fender or guard to prevent burning logs from accidentally rolling out upon the floor. The upper end of this fender or guard is provided with a bolt-hole through which the bolt 7 passes, as clearly shown at Fig. 1, so that. said bolt and its nut8 not only serve to hold the bars 1 in proper parallelism and adjustment, but also secure the fender in position.
10 is a removable shelf or support adapted to hold a kettle or other vessel in proximity to the fire and is preferably of the form shown at Fig. A, the shelf portion being of ring form and terminating in a hook 11, adapted to embrace the front portions 4 of the fire-dogs,
which latter are of such suitable cross-section as to properly receive the hook 11.
It will be understood that we do not wish to be limited as to the design of the several parts of our improved fire-dogs so long as they embody the feature of the horizontal front por' tions 4, adjustable relatively to each other and secured in fixed relation by a bolt and nut, nor do we wish to be confined to the exact form and design of the fender 9, as this may also be varied without departing from the spirit of our invention.
When the parts are constructed and arranged as shown, it will be seen that the firedogs may be adjusted to adapt them to logs of different lengths and that when the fender 9 is in position logs are prevented from rolling outward. The shelf or support 10 being removable may be readily located at either side of the center to hold a kettle or other vessel in position to be heated and when not in use may,
be entirely removed.
WVhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pair of fire-dogs or andirons comprising horizontal log-supports and vertical legs at the front and rear, the 'frontportions extended upwardly, and then horizontally; and means names to this specification in the presence of for adjustably connecting the1 frontdhorlizontag two subscribing witnesses.
portions; in combination wit ai'en er ocate between the front legs, and secured in position by the means employed for adjustably connecting the front horizontal portions, sub- Witnesses:
stantially as shown and described. A. N. WILLIS,
In testimony whereof we have signed our J. A. BELL.
