SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,869, dated September 2, 1890.

Be it known that I, J OSEPH H. THOMPSON, of Wilmington, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Eraser, of which the following is a full,

clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved eraser, specially designed for use on blackboards to erase chalk-marks,

and which is very simple and durable in construction, noiseless when used, and conveniently handled.

The invention consists of a flexible back carrying a cloth or felt facing, and a spring I 5 handle held on the said back.

The invention also consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as Willbe described hereinafter,and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.

The improved eraser A is provided with a facing B, made of strips of cloth or felt folded upon each other, preferably in elongated form,

0 as shown in Fig. 1. The upper edges of the strips of the facing B are secured by glue or other suitable means to the under side of a flexible back 0, preferably made of canvas, rubber, or other suitable material, and having 3 5 its ends D lapped onto the back, so as to form eyes E, through which are adapted to pass the cross-bars F of the handle G, preferably made of a single piece of spring-wire, and having the two sides II H, curved upward from one cross-bar F to the other, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1.

In each of the sides His formed a spring I, so as to make the said sides elastic, and the sides are connected with each other at the top 5 by a crossbar J.

On the top of the back 0 is placed a rectangular wire frame K, secured by staples or rivets L to the said back 0, the staples or rivets passing over the eyes E and clinched on the under side of the back 0. By thus forming the eraser a springback is provided,

which readily gives to any pressure applied to the handle when the facing B is rubbed on the blackboard. It will further be seen that the facing B, made in the manner described, does not readily wear, and consequently lasts a long time, and the chalk can readily be removed by slightly knocking the eraser against a table or bench. It will further be seen that the handle G can be conveniently taken hold of by the operatorin order to move the eraser about on the blackboard to remove the chalkmarks. As the back of the eraser is made flexible, it does not stick to the blackboard, and it permits the facing to adjust itself to any unevenness of the board.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An eraser comprising a flexible back, a cloth or felt facing secured to the said back ed gewise, and a spring-handle held on the said back, substantially as shown and described.

2. A11 eraser comprising a flexible back, a cloth or felt facing secured on the said back, a handle made of a single piece of spring-wire and having its cross-piece engaging the eyes of the said flexible back, and sides connecting the cross-pieces with each other and provided with springs, substantially as shown and described.

In an eraser, a handle consisting of two end Crossbars 8 and connecting side bars having coils forming springs, substantially as set forth.

4:. In an eraser, a handle and back for erasers consisting of a flexible strip folded upon itself at its ends to form eyes, cross-bars extending through said eyes, and side arms connecting the said cross-bars and formed therewith from a single piece of wire, substantially as set forth.

5. I11 an eraser, the handle comprising end cross-bars, curved side bars connecting said end bars and provided with coils forming springs, and an oblong frame, the ends of which are secured to the said two cross-bars, substantially as set forth.
