FRANCIS W. WADE, OF EAST ST. LOUIS, ILLINOIS.
BLACKBOARD-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application filed February 19, 1907. Serial No. 358,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS W. WADE, a citizen of the United States, anda resident oi East St. Louis, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning Blackboards, ot' which the `following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a device or Cleaning blackboards, and consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts as will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a device whereby the chalk-dust may be removed from the blackboard, and to provide said board with a clean black polished surface.
In the drawings z-Figure I is a perspective view of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cio'sssectional view showing the manner oi removing or replacing the covering on the block. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view ol' my invention.
In the construction of my invention I provide an elongated block 5, its one side being provided with a recess or groove 6. In said block I also provide bores 7 of sufficient depth to receive the screws S.
Upon the horizontal suri'ace of the groove G I provide a pair of plates 9 held in position by nails or screws as desired, and in said plate is provided an internally screw threaded bore l0 in which operate the screws S.
Around the i'our elongated surl'aces of the block 5 I provide a covering Il which may be of any suitable soft material having a nap, carpet being the most preferable, and the ends of said covering are formed into a loop as indicated by the numeral l2, and into each loop I insert a spindle or rod I3 which retains the covering in a taut position when the semi-circular plate 14 is brought in contact therewith by the manipulation of the screws S. The plate I4 is of suiiicient width that when contacting with the looped ends of the covering, and by means of the tightening of the screws it will force the ends downwardly and stretch the covering tightly around the entire block.
The screws are of suflicient length to permit the same to be raised at a height sufficient to remove or replace the ends of the covering without detaching the plate lI4: or the screws 8. By this arrangement all four sides of the cleaner can be used, and the operator when using the device to clean oii a blackboard dampens the covering with an oil, preferably kerosene, and when brought in contact with the blackboard it will produce an unexcelled writing surface. It also dispenses with the present method oi' washing the board With sponge and water, it also absorbs all of the dust, it leaves no traces oi crayon.
This device is used by the janitors of the school about once a week to clean the entire series of blackboards in a school building.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A device for cleaning Iblackboards, comprising an elongated groeved block, a coveringl located around the block, spindles secured to the ends of the covering, :1nd a plate contacting with the spindles for tightening the cover around the block, substantially as specified.
2. A device for cleaning blackboards, comprising` a block, a covering located around the block, the ends of said covering provided with loops, spindles placed in said loops, a plate secured to said block by screws, and brought in contact with the spindles to tightly retain the covering in position and so arranged as to provide four contacting surfaces to the cleaner, substantially as specified.
25. A device for cleaning blackboards, comprising an elongated block provided with a groove, plates located in said groove in which operate adjusting screws, a covering located around the four sides of the block, the ends of said covering provided with loops, spindles located in the loops, said spindles together with the loops of the covering located in the groove ol the block, a plate held by adjustingl screws contacting with the spindles and covering for tightly retainingr the cover in position around the four surfaces of the block, substantially as specied.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification. in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS W. WADE.
