Beitknown thatLMILToN W. GATOH,a citizenoftheUnitedStates,residingat Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to that class of polishers more particularly intended for use in polishing russet or other boots or shoes; and the invention has for itsobject to provide a polisher of the class referred to which, while being of simple construction, so that it may be cheaply manufactured, will be compact and convenient in use and will have no objectionable outside projections, such as would be liable to scratch or mar the surfaces of the articles being polished. To this end the improved polisher comprises a rigid body or block, preferably of wood, to one face of which is permanently attached a thick pad of felt or other suitable cushioning material, over which is tightly stretched a doubled strip of cloth or other suitable polishing material, held in-place on the body-block by a pivoted Wire loop near one end of said block and by a spring. clamping-loop near the other end of said body-block, the spring clamping-loop comprising torsional coil spring portions, which are received within a recess formed in the under side of the body-block.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved polisher. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail to illustrate the construction by which the spring-clamp is held in place.

Referring to the drawings, A denotes the body of the polisher, consisting, preferably, of a block of wood formed with convex upper and lower surfaces, so as to taper somewhat toward its ends, which are preferably rounded on the upper side, as shown. construction of the body block A affords somewhat pointcd ends to the polisher, so that such ends can be utilized in polishing or cleaning boots or shoes down close to the soles thereof.

Permanently attached to the lower convex surface of the'body-block is a pad B of felt or other suitable cushioning material. The body-block is provided at or near one end This tapering A is provided in its under side near its other end with a recess 19, in which-are housed coilspring portions (1 of a spring-clamp or clamping-loop D. The coil-spring portions d of the spring clamping-loop preferably encircle a wire or small rod E, secured in the recess 1), as by staples e or otherwise, and the endsf of the wire forming the spring-coils d are sunk into the under surface of the body-block or are received in small recesses in said surfaces, so as to hold the said spring-coils securely in place in the recess Z), thus preventing endwise outward movements of said coils from said recess.

Stretched tightly over the felt pad or cushion B is a doubled strip F, of cloth, felt, or other suitable flexible polishing material, folded around the holding-loop 0 near one end of the body-block A, and which strip passes beneath and is engaged by the spring-clamp or clamping-loop D near the other end of the said body-block, so as to be held securely in place. When it is desired to remove the strip F for the purpose of changing its polishingsurface, by folding it differently or for the purpose of replacing it by another similar strip it is only necessary to lift the clampingloop D slightly from its hold on the said strip. To prevent accidental straining or breakage of the torsional coil-springs (Z of the clamping-loop D by lifting said loop too far from the upper surfaces of the body-block, the latter may be provided with guards consisting of staples g,driven into the sides of said bodyblock,and which are so arranged over the side arms of the spring-clamp as to limit the lifting movements of the said spring-clamp.

It will be observed that my improved polisher is of such construction that while the spring-clamp thereof is very strong, so that it will reliably hold the polishing-strip in place, it does not present any outside projections, such as would endanger marring or scratching the articles being polished, owing to the fact that the torsional coil-spring portions 01 thereof are mainly housed within the recess 1) in the body-block, while at the same time said spring-clamp affords a convenient face of said block or body, and a doubled strip of flexible material covering said cushion and removably attached to the said block (5 or body by means of the said pivoted loop and spring-clamp.
