UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD F. BARR OVVS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HINGED SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,753, dated August 19, 1890.
Application filed J ma 18, 1890. Serial No. 337,298. (No model.)
. To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. BARROW'S, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinged Seats; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail View.
This invention relates to hinged seats and covers for water-closets and for other analogous purposes; andit consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim:
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a frame for the hinged seat and cover of the casing of the bowl of a watercloset, said frame consisting of the related back piece 13, the related side pieces 0 C, and the front transverse bearing-strip Z.
D indicates the closet-seat, having a transverse cleat or strip d superficially secured in the rear thereof and having laterally-projecting ends (1 A cover E is hinged to and flush with the strip d ofv the seat in the same plane with the latter and resting thereon when the seat and cover arefolded, the parts being connected by the forward, middle, and rear leaves of a triple-leaf surface-hinge I. The seat D is hinged conjointly with the cover to the back piece 13 of the frame A by the forward, middle, and rear leaves 8, g, and h of the hinges, as shown.
The inner edges of the back and sides of the frame A of the casing are related, as indicated at a, to form a bearing for the cover E and for the back and projecting ends of the transverse strip d, to which the said cover is hinged, the seat D being received at the same time in the frame, so that its upper surface is fiush with the rabbets of the latter when the seat and cover are closed.
The hinges by which the seat and cover of the closet are conjointly connected to the back piece of the frame are secured to the parts on the surface thereof, and each hinge consists of three leaves 6, g, and h, joined by double sectional pin-barrels m m. The middle leaf 9 is secured to the transverse strip or cleat d of the seat and is of the same breadth as said strip. It constitutes a part of the lever for raising the seat and cover together when the hinge is secured in position. The forward leaf 6 is secured to the cover and constitutes the fulcrum for raising the latter independently of the seat. It will be observed that this double hinge is eminently adapted for the purpose for which it is designed, as duplicate hinges are dispensed with, and its superficial disposition with reference to the seat, cover, and frame renders it exclusive of the interior of the casement, and it is therefore protected in a great measure from contact with water, which, as is well known, causes the several hinges and screws as ordinarily employed for like purposes to corrode or rust and renders removal of the same impossible without defacing the wood-work.
Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the seat-frame rabbeted at its sides and back and having at its front end a transverse bearing-strip arranged below the frame, of the seat having its free forward edge resting upon said bearing-strip and secured at its rear end upon the under side of a cleat extending beyond said seat and seated in said rabbeted portion of the frame, and the cover hinged to the cleat and folding down upon said seat, said cleat being hinged at its rear edge in the rear portion of the rabbeted surface of said frame, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDNVARD F. BARROVVS.
