PATENTED NOV. 26, 1907.
W. H. TORODE.
HINGE.

June/tor Mailman/7; forade Mat-names %M has for its objects to produce WILLIAM H. TORODE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HINGE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed October 20. 1906. Serial No. 339,871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. TORODE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges of the type employed for hanging doors or the like, and
a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which will be exceedingly strong and durable, one which will present a flush joint when the door is closed, and one in the use of which the door will swing freely in openin or closing.
I/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge embodying the invention and showing the parts in closed position. Fig. 2 is a detail, horizontal sec tional view, showing the hinge applied. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the leaves. Fig.4 is a perspective view of the coupling member forming a part of the hinge.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the hinge as a whole comprises a pair of hinge members or leaves 1 and a coupling member or plate 2, by means of which the leaves, which may be attached respectively to a door 3 and its frame 4, are pivotally connected, as more fully hereinafter explained.
The leaves 1, which are identical in construction, are of the form shown and having an enlarged hollow portion or head 5 of quadrant form in cross section and provided with end walls 6 having inwardly projecting trunnions or' pintles 7, while the coupling plate 2 is formed with inturned horizontal end flanges 8 of substantially semi-elliptical form, as shown, and provided with openings 9 designed to receive the pintles 7 which are removably seated in the end walls 6.
In practice, the hinge leaves are attached by means of screws or other fastening members to the parts 3 and 4, which are suitably mortised to receive the enlarged portions 5.
After the leaves are attached the coupling member or plate 2 is arranged in place and the pintles 7 inserted through the heads 6 for engagement with the openings 9 in the flanges 8, thereby pivotally connecting the leaves to permit free swinging movement of the door 3.
It is to be observed that when the door is in closed condition, as seen in Fig. 2, the plate 2 forms a closure for the outer end of the hinge and lies in a plane flush with the surface of the door 3 and frame 4, thus presenting a neat, attractive a )pearance.
It is to be further noterf that the hollow portions 5 conjointly form a hollow head having an open side and that the plate 2, in addition to coupling the leaves, forms a closure for the open side of the head. Also it will be observed that the shape of the hinge is such as to minimize the labor incident to mortising the parts 3 and 4 and reduces the amount of material to be cut away in the formation of the mortise for receiving a hinge of this type.
It will be observed that the pintles extend only through the end walls of the hinge leaves and the flanges of the coupling plate, and terminate within the recess of the hinge, so that said pintles are accessible and can be removed from the inside of the hinge when the hinge leaves are opened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A hinge comprising a pair of flat leaves having a portion curved outwardly, apertured transverse end Walls at the ends of the curved portions, a coupling plate proportioned to fit within the curved portions of the leaves and between the end walls and provided with inwardly extending flanges engaging the end walls and separate removable pintles extending only through the flanges of the coupling plate and into the apertures of the transverse end walls, whereby the pintles are accessible when the hinge leaves are opened.
