Description

Patented Aug. 12, 1890.
FTE- 1- L. B. JORDAN. sAsH STOP.
(No Model.)
Nite "rn ng s SASH-STO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,945, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed February 24, 1890. Serial No. 341,573. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN B. JORDAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident ot the city of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Sash Stops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a stop for sashes of window-frames; and this stop is composed of a platewhich is adapted to be fastened to the vertical rail of a sash, and of a spring-arm which at one end is hinged to one end ot and extends along the length and over said plate, and at its opposite end is free by pressure thereon to be moved toward and by its sprin action to move away from the plate, and has a headed guide-pin arranged to play through a guide-opening ot' the plate and allotherwise and appliedto an upper sash and in combination therewith and the lower sash of a window-frame, substantially and to operat-e as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is aface elevation of a window-frame and its upper and lower sashes, which are both closed, and of the sash-stop applied to a vertical rail of the upper sash. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a face view, and Fig. 4t is an edge View, of the sash-stop enlarged.. Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 2, but on a reduced scale, and showing the sashes opened and the stop in action in relation to them.
In the drawings, A is the window-frame, and B and C the upper and lower sashes arranged to be moved up and down to open and close them, all as well known.
D D2 is the sash-stop of this invention. This sash-stop is composed of a plate D and a spring-arm D2. The plate D is made of metal, in a sheet or other suitable form, but preferably of sheet metal, and at its opposite ends it has a hole a' for the insertion of a screw to fasten it in an upright position, end to end, on the vertical rail IS2 of the upper sash B. The spring-arm D2 lies along the length of and at its upper e'nd D3 it is held on the plate D, and its opposite end D4 is free, and preferably it has a turn or bend b toward the plate D.
D5 is apin held on the free end of the springarin D2, and projected through a hole d of and to the opposite side of the plate, where it is headed, as at D6, to protect it against escape through said hole when the spring-arm is opened from the plate, which is its normal position.
The sash-stop described is applied to a Vertical rail of the sash with the free end of its springarm lowermost, and so placed the spring-arm in its normal position and at its then lower-most end acts as a stop to the up' ward movement of the lower sash, enabling it to be left open to theheight desired (which ot course is determined by the height at which said end of thestop is placed above the meeting-rails of the sashes when the sashes are closed) and without danger of being surreptitiously disturbed, and also preventing the opening ot the upper sash to an extent greater than that of the opening of the lower sash,as has been described. By sufficiently pressing the spring-arm D2 toward the plate D the sashes can then be moved .as ordinary. The pin D5 of the spring-arm D2 steadies the movement of the arm and further braces, stitfeus, and protects it against being bent in case it should be attempted to force either sash bc- Ayond the limit to which they are confined by the stop.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire -to secure by Letters Pat- The combination, with the upper and lower sashes of a window, rof a stop composed ot' a plate D, held on a vertical rail 4of the upper sash, a spring-arm D2 at its upper end held on and at its lower end normally open from said plate, a headed guide-pin D5, held on the free end of the spring-arm, and a hole d through said plate D and receiving said pin D5, substantially as described, for-the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence ot two subscribing witnesses.
A LYMAN B. JORDAN.
