Be itknown that I, J nULnos GAMBLLEE, of Crcsskill, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, haveinvented a new and Improved Door, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsv in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door-casing and door to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same taken through the line :0 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the central part of the operating mechanism. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same taken through the line y 3 Fig. 3, and showing a part of'the door in section. Fig. 5is a sectional plan view of the same taken through the lines 2 2:, Fig. 3, and showing part of the door in section, and with part broken away. The object of this invention is to provide doors having top and bottom openings with a mechanism constructed in such a manner that the said openings will be closed as the dooris shut and uncovered when the door is opened, that the said mechanism can be so adjusted that the door can be opened and closed without affecting the covers of the openings, and that the openings can be uncovered and closed while the door is shut.
The invention consists in the combination, with a door having top and bottom openings, of slides for closing and uncovering the said openings, and a mechanism. for operating the said slides automatically and by hand, as will be hereinafter fully described,and then pointed out in the claims.
(No model said slide can be drawn up into the said groove to bring its lower edge flush with the lower this construction, should the floor be inclined or an obstruction be left upon the floor A within the doorway, the rod F will yield and allow the slide E to take an inclined position. The rod F and slide E are held up by a spiral spring, G, placed upon the said rod, with its lower end resting against the shoulder at the lower end of the groove, in which the said rod is placed, the said shoulder being faced with metal to prevent it from being worn. The upper end of the spring G rests against a shoulder or enlargement of the upper end of the said rod F. In the upper end of the rod F is formed a perforation to receive a pin, H, attached to the forward side of the lower end of the bar I, which slides upon a plate, J, secured in a recess in the middle part of the door O. The upper and lower parts of the sliding bar I are slotted to receive pins K L, attached to the upper and lower parts of the plate J, to keep the said sliding bar I in place as it moves up and down.
To the forward side of theupper ends of the sliding bar I is attached a pin, M, to enter a perforation in the lower end of the rod N, the upper end of which is provided with a screwthread, and is screwed into a screw-hole in the plate 0, or in a lug or nut formed upon or rigidly attached to the said plate 0, so that the said plate will be moved up and down by and with the sliding bar I. The plate 0 slides up and down in a recess in the center bar of the door-frame, and has a number of perforations, P, formed through it for the passage of air.
In the upper parts of the panels of the door G door, and when the sliding plate 0 is raised the perforationsl will be opposite the spaces between the perforations Q, and the passage of air will be prevented.
To the upper part of the sliding bar I is secured the upper end of a spring, R, which is made with a lateral extension on its lower end, which overlaps the upper part of the bar S. The bar S rests and slides on the plate J, and is slotted to receive the pin T, attached to the said plate J to serve as a guide to the said bar S.
To the lower side of the extended lower end of the spring R is attached a pin, U, to enter a hole in the upper part of the sliding barS, and cause the said bar S to move up and down with the spring R and bar I.
To the lower end ofthe sliding bar S is pivoted the end of the long arm of the elbowlever V, which is pivoted at its angle to the plate J The short arm of the elbow-lever V projects upward, and has a slot, WV, formed in it to receive the flattened neck in the inner end of the rod X.
In the side of the short arm of the elbowlever V is formed an opening leading into the slot W, so that by sliding the end of the rod X down into the lower end of the slot W the said rod can be disconnected from the said lever. The rod X slides in a hole leading in from the outer edge of the door 0, and its outer part is enlarged and hasits outer end beveled, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the said rod can be pushed inward by havingits outer end come in contact with aplate, Y, attached to the door-jamb.
The outer part of the perforation in which the rod X Works is countersunk to receive the enlarged outer part of the said rod X, and to receive the spiral spring Z, placed upon the rod X, with its outer end resting against the shoulder of the said rod, and its inner end resting against the shoulder at the inner end of, the countersink of the perforation in which the said rod works, so that the said spring Z, will hold the rod X, pressed outward in position to strike against the plate Y,and the long arm of the elbow lever V, the sliding bars S I, the rods F N, and the slides E 0 will be raised against the tension of the spring G, uncovering the openings at the bottom and top of the door, and allowing the said door to swing open and shut freely.
When the door is shut, the outer end of the rod X strikes against the plate Y, and the said rod is pushed inward, which lowers the long arm of the elbow-lever V and the sliding bars S I, the rods F N; and the slides E 0, closing the bottom and top openings of the door 0. The guide-pin K projects to receive and serve as a pivot to the hub of the double cam a, which is made in crescent shape, and has the convex edge of its upper arm beveled upon the outer side to engage with the recessed edge of the spring R, beveled upon the inner side, so that when the said upper arm of the double cam a is turned against the edge of the said spring, the lower end of the said spring will be raised, withdrawing the pin U from the sliding bar S, so that the door can be shut without covering the bottom and top openings of the said 'door. \Vhen the double cam a is turned in the other direction,its lower arm engages with the flange, rib, or shoulder 1;, formed upon the sliding bar I, and forces the said bar, the rods F N, and the slides E O downward, covering the bottom and top openings of the door. By this construction the slides E O can be adjusted independent of the rod X. cis a key, knob, or other handle, placed upon the hub of the double cam a, and secured in place by a pin, d, passing through the said hub and the shank of the said key, or other suitable means.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent l. The combination, with a door,O, having top and bottom openings, of the slides O-E-I, the rodsN F, connectingthe said slides, the spiral spring G, placed upon the lower rod,F, the spring R,attached to the slide I, and having pinU, the sliding bar S, having perforation to receive the said pin :U, the elbow-lever V, having its long arm connected with the slide S, and having a slot,W, with side opening in its short arm, the rod X, engaging'with the slotted arm ofthe elbow-lever V, and the spiral spring Z, placed upon the said rod X and pressing it outward,substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said slides will be operated automatically to cover and uncover the top and bottom openings as the door is closed and opened, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the door 0, the central slide, I, connected by the rods N]? with the top and bottom slides,O-E, and havingshoulder b, and the spring -R attached to the said slide I, and having its recessed lower end beveled, of the double earn a, having-its upper arm beveled, and the key a, secured to the cam-hub, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said slides can be throwrtont of connection with the rod X, and the said top and'bottom slides operated by hand, as set 'forth.
