NEIL T. MCOLEER, OF GREGORY, MIOHIGAN.
SLIDING-DOOR FASTENER.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed May ll, 1908. Serial No. 430,723,
To all 'wlzom it 'may conce'm:
Be it known that I, NnrL T. MoCLiinR, a citizen of the -United States, residing at Gregory, in the county of Livingston and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding- Door Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to latches for barns and other buildings; and it consists in the novel construction and combination' of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the latch, showing the door-post and a portion of the door in section. Fig. 2 is a front view of the latch.
A is a portion of the door-post, and B is a portion of the door which slides back and forth in the plane of the arrow in Fig. 1.
C is a metallic socket which is let into the front face of the door and which is provided with an inclined surface c next to the edge of the door.
D is the main portion of the latch which is provided with a hole (Z at one end.
E is a staple, one leg of which engages with the hold (Z, and which is driven into the door-post so that the part D is hinged to the door-post and is also free to move to a limited extent in a Vertical plane.
F is a shoulder on the part D which forms an abutment for the edge of the door to bear against when the door is closed.
The latch is provided With a tooth at its opposite end from the hole (Z. This tooth has an inclined under surface f' for the edge of the part 0 to strike against.
Gr is an eye at the end of the part D over the said tooth, which serves as a handle.
H is a rod provided with a screwthreaded end portion /L which engages loosely with a hole in the part D close adjacent to the shoulder F. Two nuts z' are provided for securing the rod H to the part D and adjusting its position.
The rod H is slidable in a hole j in the door-post, and it is provided with a knob or handle I on the oppositc end of it from the nuts. A spiral spring J is interposed between the knob I and the door-post. One end portion of this spring is preferably let into a recess in the door-post.
lVhen the door is closed it engages autoniatically with the toothed end portion of the latch, and the spring J presses the door against the door-post so that it is weathertight and cannot rattle. The latch can be operated from either side of the door, and it does not project into the door-way when the door is open.
That T claim is:
1. The combination, with a door-post provided with a hole, and a slidable door having a socket at its edge; of a latch hinged to the said door-post at one end and provided at its other end with a shoulder for the edge of the door to bear against and a tooth for engaging with the said socket, a rod secured to the main portion of the said latch adjacent to the said shoulder and projecting through the said hole in the doorpost and provided with a knob on its free end, and a spring arranged between the said knob and the door-post.
2. The combination, with a door-post provided with a hole, and a slidable door having a socket at its edge; of a latch hinged to the said door-post at one end and provided at its other end with a shoulder for the edge of the door to bear against and a tooth for engaging with the said socket, a rod having a screwthreaded portion at one end and adjustable longitudinally in a hole in the main portion of the said latch adjacent to the said shoulder, nuts for securing the said rod in position, a knob on the free end portion of the said rod which projects through the said hole in the door-post, and a spring arranged between the said knob and the door-post.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
NEIL T. MGCLEER.
Vitnesses:
ELDA A. KUHN, L. K. MCCLEER.
