A WITNESSES: W W wag,- I By I 24 /2; M
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRVING P. FAVOR, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO .I. MARSCIIING & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
ARTISTS KIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Y'atent NO. 424,603, dated April 1, 1890.
Application filed March 12, 1889. fieri'al No- 302,987. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING P. FAVOR, of the city, county, and ,State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented 5 certain new and useful Improvements in Artists Color-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved artists kit in which the color-tubes, oil and I varnish bottles, brushes, and a palette are stored away in a very compact and convenient manner, the kit when closed having the appearance of a music-roll.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l I represents a perspective view of my improved artists kit. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the same in open position with the palette removed. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the detachable tray for the color-tubes.
Fig. at is a perspective view of the folding palette; and Fig. 5, a vertical transverse section of the kit, drawn on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
2 5 This artists kit comprises two seini'cylindrical sections A A, the meeting edges of one side being connected by hinges and the meeting edges of the other side provided with a locking device. The kit is also provided with 0 a handle for carrying it. The interior of the kit is divided into two spaces by a partition B, which is hinged at one edge to the section A and retained in closed position by a springcatch I), attached to said section and grasp- 5 ing the opposite edge of the partition. The partition is provided with a hinged handle 5 for opening it after the spring-catch has been released.
In the section A are arranged two trays O 40 O, the lower tray O being fixed, while the upper one C is made detachable. The trays O O support the color-tubes in corrugated holders. The partition B retains the tubes in position on the tray C, while the bottom 5 of this tray retains the tubes in position on the fixed tray O. The semi-section A is provided with longitudinal partitions a, which are arranged parallel and close to the sides of the same, and which are connected by transverse partitions a, so as to form pockets or spaces for the oil and varnish bottles and spaces for the brushes, 8.50., between the par titions a and the side walls of the section A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. A folded palette D is interposed between the partition 13 and the varnislnbottles stored away in the parti tions ac, so as to fill up the available space between the bottles and the partition 13 of the section-A, and keep thereby the bottles, brushes, &c., in position.
lVhen the kit is to be used, the sections are opened, as shown in Fig. 2, and the palette and detachable tray removed, so as to give access to the lower tray and the different parts of the sections. After use the colortray and palette are replaced, the partition locked on the same, and the sections closed and locked together. The box is carried in a convenient. manner by the handle, having the appearance of a music-roll. Itholds the colors andall the other parts firmly in their places and stores them in a very convenient and compact manner, so as to be instantly ready for use when required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-*- 1. An artists kit composed of two hinged semi-cylindrical sections, one section having a fixed tray, a detachable tray above the fixed 8o tray, and a hinged partition above said detachable tray, and the other section having longitudinal and transverse partitions forming pockets for the storage of oil and varnish bottles and brushes, substantially as set S 5 forth.
2. -An artists kit composed of two semicylindrical sections provided with a locking device for connecting them, one section being provided with a fixed color-tray, a detachable o color-tray, and a hinged partition covering said trays, the other section havinglongitudidinal and transverse partitions forming pockets forartists materials. and a folding palette interposed between the hinged partition of 5 the first section and the partitions of the second section, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
