To all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, 'J i'mswl41tosE, a citizen of the United States, 'resid1ng-1n Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,khave invented certain Improvements "in Umbrella 'stands, of which the followlngjis a specification.

One object of my invention is'to provide a structure particularly adapted fto'support a series of elongated objec'tssuchjas umbrellas, canes or the like, which shall be so made that when desired it may be collapsed. in order to permit of its storage or trans-q portation with the utmost conven1ence;.thev

arrangement of parts being such that when so collapsed it shall occupy but relatively little space.

I further desire to provide a stand or holder having the'above noted characteristics, which shall be simple and substantial as well as relatively inexpensive.

Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa stand constructed according to my invention, the parts being illustrated as in their extended positions ready for use; Fig. 2 is a per-- spective View showing the stand of Fig. 1 with 1ts parts 1n thelr collapsed or nested positions; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section illustrating the detail construction of the lower part of the container forming the base. 1 In the above drawings, 1 represents the base of the stand which is preferably formed as a shallow box having a bottom sect-ion 2, side sections 3 and end sections 4. Fixed to the bottom section 2, adjacent to but spaced away from the end sections 4 are two pairs of knees or short angles 5, which are rigidly and permanently connected to the bottom section by riveting or otherwise so that each of them has one part whose fiatfaceis substantially parallel with the adjacentface of an end section.

The upper part of the stand consists of an open rectangular frame 6 made of sheet metal of suitable stiffness and of such outside dimensions as to fit within the base or container 1, its height being suchthat when placed within said container its upperedges are substantially flush with the top thereof. The upper ends "of eachof the side members are preferably bent toward each other and mounted in suitable bearings '11 on the side .ofthe'end members of the frame 6 so as to be free to return therein. The bottom members l0 ofthese supporting structures are of such length that theside members 9 with said bottom members easily fit'between the side members of the frame 6, and the angle pieces 5 are spaced away from the ends 4 of the container 1 such a distance that said bottom members 10 tightly fit between them and said ends 4. With this arrangement of parts, when the device is desired for use, the frame supporting members are extended a in the positions shown in Fig, 1 substan tially at right anglesto the general plane of the frame 6, and the bottom members 10 are each inserted between one of the ends 4 ofthe container 1 and the pair of angles 5 adjacent thereto. The stand thusformed is a relatively rigid structure since the side members 9 of the frame supporting structures are prevented from swinging out wardly partly by reason of the fact that their lower portions engage and are braced by said end members 4 while their opposite ends engage the end members of the frame 6. When it is desired ,tocollapse the stand for storage or transportation, the frame 6 with its supportingstructures is pulled upwardly away from the container 1 so that the bottom members lO of the said supporting structures are disengaged from the angles 5'. Said supporting structures may then be turned in their bearings 11 through an angle of substantially degrees so that they lie one over the other within the frame 6 which may then be placed within the con tainer 1 in the nested position shown in Fig. 2; i

Inasmuchas all of the parts of my stand maybe made of relatively light and stiff sheet 'and bar material without impairing the rigidity and strength of the finished, structure, the latter is comparatively light in weight and by reason of the arrangement of parts described it 1s convement' to use and adjust; being particularly valuable for use inchurches and halls 'whereit may be of a relatively shallow container formingv a base; an open frame formed to removably fit within the container; intersecting bars extending between opposite sides of the frame to form receiving compartments; means for supporting the frame ata distance above the container consisting of U- shaped rods having their ends hinged to said "frame and foldable within the same; with means carried bythe container for detachably engaging said, supporting rods.

2. The combination in a stand of a container; holding members fixed to the bottom of said container, each with a part spaced away from and substantially parallel with an end of the container; an open frame having receiving compartments; and supporting members movably connected to the frame so as to be capable of folding within the same or of extending substantially at right angles thereto, said supporting members removably fitting between the ends of the container respectively and the holding members adjacent thereto. a
