Improvement in Lunch-Boxes.
No. 133,129. Patented N0v.19,i872.
"wwwsummum W.

WILLIAM H. VAN ALLEN, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUNCH-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Iatent No. 133,129, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. VAN AL- LEN, of the city and county of Albany, kState of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lunch-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a description thereof, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the lunch-box embodying the invention when opened out; Fig. 2 represents the saine when closed; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same.
The same letters of. reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to a lunch-box; and consists in two drawer-receptacles hinged together in such a manner as to enable the one to fold over the other, and provided with drawers, and a hinged flap on door, and a clasping-band or equivalent holdin g-piece, all of which are so arranged that the drawers will be capable of being drawn out of their receptacles, or being closed in, and the whole folded together in a compact form a'nd secured in a reliable manner; the object of this invention being to provide separate and distinct receptacles or compartments for holding distinct and separate any articles which it is desirable to preserve unmixed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe it in reference to the drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawing, AA represent each a drawer-receptacle,which receptacles are hinged together at a, Figs. 1 and 3. The said receptacles are made of heavy straw-board well cemeuted at the several jointures ot their several parts, and have one of their ends open to permit the introduction of the drawers B B. The drawers B B are also made of straw-paper, and are made of a size to correspond with the interior of the receptacles A A', in which are the said drawers. b b are linger-pieces at tached to the ends ofthe drawers B B to serve asma means for pulling the said drawers out. C is a iap-door hinged to one of the receptacles A at its open end, and made with a length sufficient to close over the open ends of both receptacles when folded over, as in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and is intended to close over the drawers B B. c is a tie or clasp, which is secured with the bottom of the receptacle A, and is capable of passing over the flap-door C and being secured to the top of the receptacle A, as in Fig. 2. I) D is any suitable handle or handles attached to the sides of the receptacles opposite their hinged sides, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
IVhen it is desired to use this invention the tie cis unloosed and the flap U is thrown down to uncover the ends of the drawers B B. The two receptacles are then unfolded, as in Fig. l, when the drawers can be withdrawn, and any desirable articles can be placed therein, after which the said drawers will be shoved back in place and the receptacle A will be folded over the receptacle A, when the flapdoor C will be turned up and secured by the tie c.
' By my invention a cheap and convenient re ceptacle for holding and carrying any articles, such as lunches for picnics, excursions, or workniens dinners, or small instruments or tools, such as are used by ladies in sewing, knitting, Ste., or papers of lawyers, or other articles which may be received in the drawers, is produced.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lunch-box consisting of the receptacles A A', hinged at a so as to be capable of folding over each other, and provided with drawersv B B, flap-door C, and tie c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
