SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,420, dated December 1'7, 1889.

.To all whom it may concern:-

Be it known that 1, Louis HAUSMANN, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Suspender-Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention is an improvement in that class of Suspender-buckles which consists of a plate having inwardly-bent perforated ears and a toothed gripper or jaw having trunnions adapted to enter the perforations. I provide the ears of such plate with openings and narrow open slots leading into them, and the gripper with headed trunnions adapted to pass through such slots and thereby enter the openings, whereby the plate and jaw may be quickly connected or disconnected.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the improve ment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same on the line a: :r of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a face view of the blank for the front plate, and Fig. 5 is a face view of the blank for the gripping plate or jaw.

.The improved buckle A is provided with a front plate B, on the lower end of which are held the suspender-ends O, of any approved construction. On the sides'of the front plate 13 are formed rearwardly-extending U -shaped ears D, each of which is provided on its inner end D with an opening D into which is adapted to pass the trunnion E, formed on the gripping plate or. jaw E, provided with the usual serrated edge adapted to engage the web of the Suspender passed between the back of the front plate B and the said gripping-plate E. lhe gripping plate or jaw E is provided with the usual downwardly-extending arm E adapted to be taken hold of by the operator to move said gripping plate or jaw up or down in order to engage the serrated edgewith the web or disengage it from the same. formed a head E located between the ends of the U-shaped ear D and serving to prevent sidewise movement of the gripping plate or jaw E. In order to conveniently introduce the trunnions E with their heads E into the respective ears D, a slot D is formed at the end of each ear D, said slot leading from the outside into the opening D The two prongs formed by the 'end of each ear D are pressed apart, so as to permit of introducing the trunnion E into the respective aperture D after which the two prongs are again closed, and thetrunnion is prevented I from passing out of the aperture.

The blank from which the plate B is formed is shown in Fig. 4, and the blank from which the gripping plate or jaw E is formed is illustrated in Fig. 5.

It'will be seen that by thus constructing a buckle the pivotal parts are completely hidden, so that the buckle avoids sharp corners or rough edges, which are usually liable to tear the shirt or other garment over which the suspender is used. It will further be seen that the gripping plate or jaw E is prevented from becoming detached from the plate B on account of the heads E engaging the insides of the inner ends of the U-shaped ears D. Said heads E also prevent sidewise motion of the plate E, so that the latter always securely engages the web. of the suspender with its serrated edge.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters slots, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
