Be it known that I, GEORGE R. NETTLETON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in buckles, and while adapted for various purposes, is particularly adapted for use as a buckle for belts for personal wear, the object of the invention being to provide means for connecting the fixed end of the strap located within the ends of the buckle frame and not interfering with the passage of the free end of the strap; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

In carrying out my invention I employ a frame plate 2 having edge walls 3, 1, formed with inclined slots 5 for the movement of a clamping pin 6, this being a well known form of clamp for buckles. At the rear of the slots and between the walls 3 and 1 is a transverse division plate 7, this plate being located between theinner face 8 of the buckle frame plate 2 and the inner edge 9 of the walls which are tapered from front to rear. This division plate may be held in place by forming it on opposite ends with lugs 10 which enter perforations 11 formed for them in the said walls 3 and 4; and if desired, this plate may be formed with downwardly extending ears 12 which extend to the edge of the said walls, the ears having perforations 13 to receive the trunnions 14 of a lever 15. formed with an inwardly set stop edge 22. The lever is formed with a gripping edge 16 and may be provided with teeth 17. Preferably and as herein shown, in order to make a smooth back for the buckle, the un- .dersicle of the forward portion of the frame will be closed by turning the edges 18 and 19 of the said walls inward, and if this is done the rear edges of the turned. in sections may be notched to form a clearance opening 20 for convenient access to the finger portion 21 of the lever which when turned into its closed position will rest upon the inwardly set stop edge 22 of the plate. The fixed end 2 1 of the belt is inserted between the inner face of the plate 7 and the lever, and against the stop edge 22 and the lever turned so that the gripping edge clamps the belt against the plate 7. free end of the strap enters the forward end of the frame over the clamping roller 6 and passes over the plate 7 which separates the fixed end from the free end of the belt. By mounting the belt in the frame provision is made for attaching the fixed end of the plate to the buckle at a point within the rear end of the frame and provides a space through which the free end of the strap may pass without obstruction.

I claim 1. A buckle comprising a frame having edge walls, an independently formed transverse division plate located between the inner faces of the said walls, a clamping lever mounted in the frame and co-acting with the inner face of the division plate as a means for fixing one end of the strap to the buckle, and means for clamping the free end of the strap in the frame.

2. A buckle comprisin a frame having inwardly extending edge walls a division plate located between the walls forward of the rear end of the frame, said division plate formed with inwardly extending perforated ears, av lever mounted in the said perforations and having a gripping edge coacting with the inner face of said division plate, whereby the strap may be held between them, and means for adjustably connecting the free end of the strap with the buckle.
