EMIL F. GENNERT, OF BROOKLYN, NETV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. P. GLEASON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK.
ELECTRIC-LAMP ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-FIXTURES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,658, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed J'u11e 12, 1888.
- piece and socketpiece adapted to be used in conjunction with each other, and together constituting a convenient attaching device, as is more fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, in
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the arm. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the socket. Fig. 3 shows in central section the arm and socket combined and in place, also a portion of a gas-fixture. 1
A represents a portion of an ordinary gasfixture having a screw-nipple, a, adapted to receive the gas-burner, but upon which I firmly screw the socket-piece B, which is tubular, the inner portion of the lower end being suitably screw-threaded, to adapt it for the purpose, and the outer portion of the upper end being formed into a suitable screw-threaded nipple, b, to receive the gas-burner. At the base of the nipple b, on this socket B, is formed a short neck or collar, 0, having three or more angles or corners, and at its base shoulders c c are formed by the circle arcs of the socketbody. This neck 0 is adapted to receive the eye end of the arm D, which arm, as is shown by Fig. 1, is provided with a screw-threaded nipple, d, at one end, adapting it to connect an electric lamp. This nipple d has an opening, E, extending through it, through which the conducting-wires are led into the lamp.
The other end of the arm D is formed broad and fiat and pierced with an angular opening or eye, 6, adapted to fit snugly on the neck 0 of the socket-piece B. The end 6 of the arm' screwed on the nipple b, will securely clamp and hold it.
Serial No. 276,888. (No model.)
It will be seen that the arm D may be placed in any direction corresponding with one of the angles on the neck of the socket-piece B, so that no matter what direction it is desired to have it project it will require no more than one-eighth of a turn of the socket-piece to properly set it. v
I am aware that an arm having a nipple at one end for attaching a lamp and a socket to screw on the nipple of a gas-burner at the other end has been in use; but this has been made all of onepiece, and the result isthat it is inapplicable to many gas-fixtures, because the projecting arm, being rigid and of one piece with the socket, will strike against portions of the gas-fixture adjacent to the nipple, and thus prevent turning the socket, so as to screw it into place, whereas, in my invention, the socket B, being a separate piece, can readily be screwed onto the nipple of any gas fixture, then the eye of the arm adjusted about its neck, so the arm will stand as nearly in the direction required as the an-' 0 and nipple b, and the arm, as D, one end of which is provided with a nipple adapting it to attach a lamp and the other end with an angular opening or eye adapted to fit the neck of said socket, combined and arranged in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention'l have signed myname, in presence of two witnesses, this 6th day of June, 1888.
