UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAURITZ W. ANDERSEN, OF WATER'BURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE PLUME &
ATWOOD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORA- TION OF CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED ELECTRIC SOCKET AND SHADE-HOLDER AND SOCKET-COVER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAURrrz V. ANDER- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a Combined Electric Socket and Shade- Holder and Socket-Cover, of which the following is a specification.
My'invention relates to holders and covers for electric lamp sockets or receptacles used for lighting purposes.
So far as I am aware all covers heretofore made for electric sockets or receptacles for lighting purposes, have been constructed to receive the standard electric sockets.
The object of my invention is to provide a holder and cover adapted for use with electric sockets or receptacles of the character heretofore employed in electrically illuminated signs for display or advertising purposes, and which receptacles are cheaper than the standard sockets, and its further object is to provide the holder with an integral means for the attachment of a shade.
In the accompanying drawing the several parts are shown detached in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, in which Fig. 1 shows the cover in elevation, Fig. 2 shows the receptacle in elevation and partial section, Fig. 3 shows the screw-threaded collar in elevation, Fig. 4 shows the holder in elevation, Fig. 5 shows the screw threaded ring in elevation, and Fig. 6 is a partial vertical section of the parts assembled, the receptacle being shown in elevation.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The essential parts of my improved device are the two members 1 and 2.
The member 1 forms a support or holder for both the socket or receptacle 3 and shade 4, while the member 2 forms a cover for the receptacle.
The member or annulus 1 is preferably stamped or pressed up out of a single piece of sheet metal and is open at both ends, one end having an inturned annular flange 5 and the other end of larger diameter being formed as a concave ring 6 provided with spaced apart holes into which are secured interiorly screw-threaded bushings 7 to receive the threaded clamping screws 8 which retain the shade flange 4 within said ring 6.
The cover 2 sets over the upper or smaller Specification of Letters Patent.

end of the holder 1 and fits around the vertical portion thereof immediately above the concave ring 6, while its bottom edge rests upon the top of said ring. The said vertical. portion of the holder is provided with spaced holes 9, while in the lower part of the cover 2, which fits around this part of the holder, there are corresponding holes, so that when the cover is placed over the holder and the holes therein brought into register with the similar holes in the holder, the cover and holder are securely fastened together by set screws 10, which are screwed into such holes.
The cover 2 preferably spun or stamped up from a single piece of sheet metal, and is provided at its top with a threaded nipple 11 by which it may be attached to an electrolicr or other fixture, or it is equally serviceable as a suspended holder, the conductor wires 12 in all instances being passed through the nipple 11.
The body of the socket or receptacle 3 is formed of vitrified material, and contains the threaded lamp receiving shell 13, and the usual electrical connections for the conductor wires 12.
The end portion of the receptacle 3, surrounding the lamp receiving shell-13, is of reduced diameter and exteriorly screw threaded. This screw threaded portion of the receptacle meshes with the threaded ring 14, which ring has an annular outturned flange which contacts with the under surface of the flange 5 on the holder 1, when the screw-threaded portion of the ring 14 is passed through the opening in the upper end of the holder 1. Surrounding the ring 14 is a screw-threaded collar 15, provided with an outturned flange which flange forms a stop for the receptacle 3 when said receptacle is screwed into the ring 14, a shoulder on the receptacle coming into contact with said flange.
16 indicates the lamp bulb which is screwed into the receiving shell 13.
The parts are assembled as follows: The ring 14 is inserted into the holder 1, its screw-threaded part being passed out through the opening in the upper end of said holder, when the flange on said ring contacts with the under-surface of the flange 5 on said holder. The screw-threaded collar 15 is then screwed over the screwthreaded end of the ring 14 when its bottom edge comes into contact with the outer surface of the flange 5 on the holder 1, and thereby locks the ring 14. securely to the holder. The screw-threaded end of the receptacle 3 is then screwed into the ring 14:, when its shoulder comes into contact with the flange on the collar 15. The receptacle is now securely connected to the holder 1. The cover 2 is then placed over the recepta cle and secured to the holder by the set screws 10. The lamp 16 is then screwed into the receiving shell 13, and the shade 4 placed within the ring portion 6 of the holder and clamped therein by the screws 8,
and thus the structure is completely assembled.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with an electric lamp receptacle, a holder provided at one end with an inturned flange and having its other end formed as a shade holder, adapted to receive and hold a shade, a ring surrounding a portion of the receptacle and having an annular out-turned flange contacting Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
with the inner surface of the said inturned flange on the holder, a second ring surrounding the first named ring, means for holding the said rings together, a cover for the receptacle and means for securing the cover to the holder.
2. In combination with an electric lamp receptacle, a holder provided at one end with an inturned flange and having its other end formed as a shade holder, a screwthreaded ring for attachment to the receptacle, said screw-threaded ring having an annular out-turned flange contacting with the inner surface of the said inturned flange on the holder, a screw-threaded collar adapted to screw over the outer surface of said screw-threaded ring and clamp it to the holder, a cover for the receptacle and means for securing the cover to the holder.
Signed by me this 6th day of Oct. 1911. LAURITZ W. ANDERSEN. Witnesses:
