SPEED REGULATING DEVICE.
Patented Jan. 15, 1889.
INVENTD UNITED STATES PATENT FFIcE.
VILLIAM E. NICKERSON, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
FLUID SPEED-REGULATING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,108, dated January 15, 1889. Application filed October 22, 1888. Serial No. 288,804. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM E. NICKER- SON, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in liluid Speed- Regulating Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a Specification.
My invention relates to that class of fluid speed-retarders in which a piston working in a cylinder is retarded by the resistance o'tl'ered to the passage of the fluid through restricted apertures, the object being to so arrange the parts that no packingboxes for the piston-rod will be required and that all tendency to leakage will be avoided. These objects I attain by the mechanism shown in the accompanyshown in vertical section.
A represents a cylinder havi n a closed bottom, B, and a head, 0. The cylinder is divided into two chambers, S and S, by :1 diaphragm. I have in the cylinder A two pistons, P and P, one on each side of the diaphragm D, as shown. The two pistons P and P are attached to the piston-rod R by any suitable means. To connect the two chambers one with the other I use a pipe, T, opening at T into the lower chamber 'and at T into the upper chamber. The upper chamber is made somewhat larger than the lower one, so as to leave a space for an excess of fluid. The upper chamber is not closed, but has an opening, F.
The chambers S and S"bctween the pistons P P and the diaphragm D are connected to each other by one or more passages. Said passages may pass directly through the diaphragm or around it through the pipe M M. The opening in the passage from S to S may 111g drawings, in which the device is fully.
be regulated by a valve, V, so as to get the desired amount of restriction to the flow of liquid from one chamber to the other. Small passages may be made through the pistons P and P, as indicated at K and L, to act in cooperation with all or any of the otherpassages for the passage of fluid from one part of the cylinder to the other. If desirable,' other Valves than the one at V can be applied to the apertures.
I claim- 1. In a fluid speed-retarder, the combination of the cylinder A, divided by a diaphragm, D, into two chambers, and pipes leading from one chamber to the other, with two pistons, P P, and piston-rod R, all operating together substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a fluid speed-retarder, the combination of the cylinder A, divided by a diaphragm into two chambers, with pistons P and P, having passages through them, the piston-rod R, and pipe T, substantially as described, and forthe purpose set forth.
3. Ina fluid speed-retarder, the combination of the cylinder A, divided by a diaphragm, D, into two chambers, with the pistons P P and apipe leading from one chamber to the other, having a valve to regulate the flow of fluid, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, 011 this 20th day of October, A. D. 1888.
WILLIAM E. NICKERSON.
