- G. S. VAUGHN. BALANCED SLIDE VALVE.
No. 558,866. Patented Apr. 21, 1896.
V 1 vn-+ j if d1 w/mEssEg- V INVENTOH A TTOHNEYS.
PATE l FlCEt GEORGE SYLVESTER VAUGHN, OF OIL CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
BALANCED SLIDE-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,866, dated April 21, 1896. Application filed September 20,1895. $eria1No.568,180. (Nomodeld To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE SYLvEsrER VAUGHN, of Oil City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Balanced Slide- Valve, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved balanced slide-valve which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to perfectly counterbalance the slide-valve, and reduce the friction incident to back pressure and other causes to a minimum.
The invention consists principally of an apertured plate having a hub fitted to slide in the steam-chest cover and on which slides the top face of the slide-valve, provided with an inlet-borewhich is at all times in register with the aperture in the plate.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the slidevalve, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the apertured plate.
The cylinder A of the engine on which the device is applied is provided with the usual ports a and b, opening into the chest B, provided with a steam-outlet B, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. I11 this chest B is fitted to slide the slide-valve 0, provided with a port 0, extending to the bottom of the slide-valve at two places, to register alternately with the ports a, and b and let steam pass into the said ports and to the ends of the cylinder A to operate the piston therein. The port 0 connects at its middle with an opening (:1 in register at all times with an opening D, formed in a plate D, having a hub D fitted to slide in a suitable seat in the cover E for the chest B.
In the top of the cover E is formed a channel E, into which leads the said opening D, and this channel connects with a steam-supply F, so that steam can pass through the channel E, opening D, and the opening cl to the port 0, and from the latter the steam is delivered to that end of the cylinder registering, by the port a or b, with the corresponding end of the port 0.
Now it is understood that when the port 0 is connected with, say, the port a then the other port I) is uncovered by the valve 0, and the exhaust from this end of the cylinder can pass through the port 1) into the chest B and through the opening D to the exhaust; but when the valve 0 shifts to the right then the port 0 connects with the port I) to let steam into this end of the cylinder, while the other port a opens into the chest B to exhaust steam from the other end of the cylinder.
By having the plate D in engagement with a ground face C on the top of the valve 0 the friction incident to back pressure and other causes is reduced to a minimum, as the exhaust-steam in the chest B presses on the plate D to counterbalance the slide-valve O. A packing-ring G is arranged in the hub I) in the seat for the said hub to prevent leakage of live steam into the chest B. c
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A steanrcylinder having ports, a steamchest inclosing the ports and having an exhaust-opening in its side and having also an exterior channel passing from one side of the chest to a point on the top thereof, the channel being in communication with the interior of the chest at the top of the same and forming the supply-opening, and a slide-valve out of contact with the interior sides of the chest and having passages, the passages being jux taposed to the ports of the cylinder and to the supply-orifice, substantiallyas described.
2. A steam-cylinder having ports, a steamchest inclosing the ports and having an exhaust-opening and having also a channel passing from one side of the chest to a point on the top thereof, the channel being in communication with the interior of the chest and at its top and forming thesteamsupply opening, an apertured plate having a hub fitting in said opening, the plate being located within the steam-chest, and a slide-valve having passages, the valve being arranged between the cylinder and the apertured plate and closing the aperture of the plate except to the passages, the passages being juxtaposed to the steam-ports of the cylinder, substantially as described.
3. A steam-cylinder having ports, a steamchest inclosing the ports and having a supply and exhaust opening, the supply-opening being in the top of the chest, an elongated apertured plate provided With a hub, the hub being fitted within the supply-opening and the plate being located within the steam-chest, and a slide-valve, the same having passages therein juxtaposed to the ports of the cylinder, the valve closing the aperture in the plate except to its passages, substantially as described.
4. A steam-cylinder having ports, a steamchest inclosing the ports and having an exhaust-opening and having also a channel passing from one side to a point on the top of the steam-chest and communicating with the interior of the chest at said point, the channel forming the steam-supply orifice,a11 elongated and apertured plate having a hub, the hub being fitted within theZsupply-orifice and the plate being located Within the chest, and a slide-valve mounted in the chest and between the cylinder and the plate, the slide-valve having passages therein registering with the aperture of the plate and with the cylinderports, substantially as described.
