Governor-Valves for Steam-Engines.

WITNESSES:- INVENTDR Q4WW' ATTIIBNEYS.
All. PHOm-A/THMRAP/l/L" 00. Mr (mew/v55 mucm) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIo.
ELIJAH K. EVERSOL, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CYRUS M. EVERSOL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GOVERNOR-VALVES FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,580., dated June 2, 1874; application filed April 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH K. EVEnsoL, of Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Governor-Valves for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved balanced governor-valves, and Fig. 2 a detail horizontal section of one of the valves.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is an improvement in governor-valves; and consists in the combination of balanced valves and an adjusting device.
In the drawing, A represents a steam'chest, of the usual construction, provided with a horizontal partition, B, having fiat valve-seats B, ground at both sides to atightly-fitting steam-joint. The valves 0 are made with flat projecting heads, which close over the valveseats at both sides of the partition, and are connected by a guide part, of triangular or other cross-section, as shown in Fig. 2, to allow the passage of the steam from the throttle-valve aperture to to the pipe connection with the cylinder.
ot the steanrchest.
The valvestems d are piv-.
F is attached to a regulating-spring, G, and the steam-supply adjusted by means of the same, together with the sliding weights F of lever F. The weighted spring-lever F is further connected with the governor of the engine, so that the balanced valves 0 indicate instantly the changes of speed, shutting ofl' entirely the steam-supply as soon as the governor-belt breaks, flies oil, or the limit of speed is reached by the governor, assuming the position shown in Fig. 2. The lower head of one valve corresponds with the diagonally-opposite upper head of the other valve, the fiat shape of the same producinga perfect seating without any leakage. The spring adjustment of the valves makes them sensitive to the smallest changes, and furnishes thereby a superior governorvalve than those hitherto used, as it decreases the danger of accidents and avoids any irregularities by the leaking of the steam.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The balanced double valves of the steamchest, sliding in valve-seats of the partition of the same, in combination with a top le'ver, adjusted by weight and spring for the speed of the engine, to be instantly closed by the governor, in the manner and for the purpose described.
