To all whom 2'25 may concern:

Be it known that I, KATE J. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates more especially to paper boxes, so called, but may be embraced in the construction of boxes made of any other suitablesheet material, and the term paper as herein employed is intended to include other usual and suitable equivalent materials employed in the construction of boxes from sheets folded to form the bottom and sides of the box, so that the said parts'are integral the one with the other.

My invention comprises certain novel combinations of parts, whereby a cheap, easilymanufactured, and ornamental box ofthe class specified is obtained,audone especially adapted u for the display of confectionery or other lightor fancy articles for sale.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box made according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a face view showing the blank and the parts thereof from which, when folded to suitable rectangular shape, the box is formed. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken through one corner of the completed box and in the line w 00 of Fig. 1.

This done, the lips a at each corner are lapped one over, the other, so that the perforations a in the one will coincide with the perforations 2) adjacent to the other. This done, the lips so arranged in relation with each other are laced together by cords or lacings f, passed through the perforations athwart the corners formed by the overlapping lips, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the lacing being duly knotted, as indicated at e", the corners of the box are firmly united and the lacing crossed on the outside, as illustrated in Fig. 1, which provides a neat ornamentation to the corners, which may, if desired, be heightened by leaving the ends of the lacings of sufficient length to form tassels dependent from the knots e. The leaves b are turned inward to a horizontal position, and their edges being duly indented or made of any desired ornamental configuration, said leaves provide an ornamental covering around the upper circumference of the contents of the box, and this enables the usual lace paper to be dispensed with. The part c is bent forward and downward along a line from the one upper rearmost corner of the box to the other, and its flaps c c c are bent downward to form an ornamental rim, which, when the box is closed, passes around and outside of the upper edges of the front and ends. The blank is provided in a direction transverse to the axis of movement of the cover with a series of holes, f, through which alternately inward and outward is passed a locking'string, one endof which projects from thefront ofthe box, while the other extends from at or near the front of the cover, so that when the latter is shut down to close the box the two ends of said locking string 9 may be tied together to hold the box in a closed condition.

It is of course to be understood that the relative proportions at the sides, ends, bottom, and cover of the box may be varied without departing from my said invention. Thus, for example, the box may be made long and narrow at the bottom, or with the bottom curved in its cross-section, as in that class of paper boxes sometimes termed hampers, and the like.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1-. A. paper box having perforated lips a, and folded to shape with said lips overlapping at the corners, and laeings 'f, passed through the perforations of the lips and athwart the corners of the box, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. A paper box having leaves I) integral therewith and arranged to fold inward over the interior of the box, lips a, integral with the blank and arranged to overlap at the corners of the box, and flaps a, integral with the blank and arranged at the free edges of the cover, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

3. A paper box having holes f, and with perforated lips a integral therewith and overlapping at the corners of the box laeings f, passed through the perforations 0f the lips and athwart the said corners, and a lockingstring, 9, passed through the holes f in the body and cover, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

4. A paper box having the locking-stringy and lacings f, with a blank folded to shape provided with holes f, and having integral therewith the perforated lips a, leaves b, and cover e, provided with flaps c, substantially as and forthe purpose herein set forth.

5. In a paper box, the combination, in a blank having lips I) integral therewith and arranged to fold inward over the interior of the box, and perforated lips a, arranged to overlap and be secured at the corners by fastening devices passed through the perforations of said lips a, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
