Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. it, 1915.
Application filed April 30, 1915. ScrialNo. 25,027.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM A. GARDY, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Winchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to boxes for containing merchandise, such for instance as candy, and particularly to boxes which are rendered ornamental for the purpose of presenting the package of goods in more attractive form.
The invention has for its object to provide an ornamental covering for the box which will embody the well-known plaited band by way of ornamentation, and to do this in a way that will be at once economical in production and permanent in construction after the package is opened as well as before and which will also adapt the plaits to serve the purpose of an efficient card holder.
It has been customary heretofore to provide boxes of candy, inclosed in a wrapper intended to be destroyed in opening the package, and having associated therewith and running over the top and ends of the box, a plaited band of wrapping material. But this plaited band was invariably released and separated by the act of opening the package, so that its service ended at the first opening even though the box might be longer retained in use, either for the unconsumed portion of its original contents, or for some subsequent use, thus losing its value not only for esthetic considerations, but as an advertising medium. Again, the separately applied plaited band heretofore used required more material to make it, be sides being applied at the filling department of the factory where the contents were made, instead of at the box factory where it could be done with better results. These and other objections incident to the former practice are wholly avoided by the present invention, which will be fully understood upon reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- T Figure l is a perspective view of a vertically telescoping two-part box with the parts slightly separated, and with one of the finishing and securing end laps displaced to disclose the construction, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the cover with which the present invention is concerned.
A represents the cover of a box with which the present invention is concerned, and B represents any suitable form of tray or bottom, in connection with which the cover is adapted to be used. For purposes of ornamentation with incident enhancement of salability, it is customary to envelop the parts of boxes for finer classes of goods with ornamental wrappers of various kinds. According to the present invention, a wrapper is employed which embodies in its structure a zone or area a, which is plaited or otherwise folded with ornamental effect which extends along the top and downwardly over the ends, where the plaits are overlaid by triangular laps, which further enhance the design. In forming this wrapper, it is folded on longitudinal lines to provide the plaits l, 1, 1*, etc., along opposite sides of the intermediate panel 2; the paper being extended from the outermost plaits l to the .edges 3, and thence downwardly over the sides 42 of the box cover. The ends a of the plaited areas are bent down over the ends 5 of the box cover and to the lower edges 6 thereof, where they terminate, while the fullness laterally beyond these end covering portions and in line with the side covering portions i is folded to provide triangular two-ply laps 7, of which the inner ply 7 terminates at the lower edge of the box end, while the outer ply is continued to provide a pasting lip 7 The triangular laps are then laid over the end covering portions of the plaited area in a way to intersect the plaits diagonally and hold each plait firmly in the plane of the plaits, the ends of the laps being overlapped at 7 and the pasting lips 7* being then folded around the bottom edges and secured on the inner faces of the box ends, as shown in Fig. Similarly, the lower edges of the side covers i are folded around the lower edges of the sides and pasted in position-at l (Fig. 2).
A box wrapper as above described is very economical to produce, offers a very neat appearance, remains in its original condition notwithstanding opening of the box, and affords an effective card holder, inasmuch as the edge of a stiff card may be made to puncture the inner crease of a plait to admit the card well beneath the plaited area.
I claim A wrapper for a box member having top, sides and ends; said wrapper comprising a longitudinally plaited intermediate portion ing lips integral with their outer plies folded around the bottom edges of the box ends and secured within the box.
The foregoing specification signed at 1;, Chelsea, Massachusetts, this 9th day of April 1915.
