CHARLES A. PRESTON, OF OAMBEIDGEPORT, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE FROST,
GEORGE H. PHELPS, AND GEORGE A. FROST, ALL OF NEX' "EON, MASSA- OHUSETTS.
GA RM ENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,147, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed December 2, 1887. Serial No. 256,777. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. PRns'roN, of Cambridgeport, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Garment-Supporters, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspecification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to construct a simple and durable garment-supporter, my invention being an improvement upon that described in United States Patent No. 368,550, granted to me August 16, 1887.
In this my present invention the supporter is composed of abutton-receiving portion consisting, essentially, of two arms to receive between them the shank or connection between the button and fabric, and alocking device consisting, essentially, of a loop adapted, when closed against the button-receiving portion, to present a bar across the outer extremityof the passage between the two arms of the buttonreceiving portion, to thereby effectually close the said passage, so that the button contained therein cannot be withdrawn. The buttonreceiving portion and the locking device are hinged or swiveled one to the other.
The supporter is provided with a strapleceiving portion formed as a component part of either the button-receiving portion or of the locking device, as will be described.
Figure 1 shows in front elevation a garmentsupporter embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a modified form of garment-supporter, the button-receiving portion being made of sheet metal; Fig. 3, a modified form of garment-supporter, the-button'receiving portion being made of wire and strengthened. Figs.
4 and 5 show modified'forms of garment-supporters, wherein the strap-receiving portions are formed as parts of the locking devices, instead of as parts of the button-receiving portions shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3; and Fig. 6 is a modified form of garment-supporter to be referred to.
Referring to Fig. 1, the button-receiving port-ion consists of a piece of wire bent to pre sent a strap-receiving portion, as a, and two arms, a, which arms receive between them the means or devices employed to secure the button to the material, fabric, or garment, and hence called the shanlcattaching device of the button. The locking device consists of a loop, b, hinged or swiveled to the material of 5 the button-receiving portion, said loop being of sufficient size to pass over the button placed between the arms of the button-receiving portion, and when closed against said button-receiving portion form a bar across the button receiving passage at the outer ends of the said arms, to thereby close said passage and prevent the button contained therein from being removed or withdrawn.
In Fig. 2 the buttonreceiving portion is made of sheet metal and the locking device is hinged to it, as Shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 the button-receiving portion is of wire bent to presentastrap-receiving portion,
as a and leave two arms a made as loops ino r i 1 I 7 stead of as single bars of wire, as shown in Fig. 1. The locking device in this instance is also hinged or swiveled to the loop a.
In Fig. 4 the strap-receiving portion a is formed integral with the locking device or loop result is obtained asin the devices previously described-viz., the shank of the button, which may be the thread holding the button to the fabric, is received between the arms a a, and the locking portion orloop crosses the button receiving passage at the outer end ofthe said 8 arms.
In Fig. 5 the locking device or loop I) and the strapreceiving portion a are made as one piece, and the button-receiving portion is made of wire bent to present two loop-like arms, o
a, the ends of the wire encircling the material of the strap-receiving portion, and the intermediate or connecting piece of wire between the arms passing through the loop I) and bearing against it to increase the spring-like 210- tion of one with relation to the other.
In Fig. 6 the button-receiving portion com-' prises the two arms a a, and the strap-receiv= 2. In a garmentsupporter, the button-re- 1 I ceiving portion comprising two arms, a a, which receivebetween them the button, combined with a locking device to close the passage between the two arms at or near the outer ends of the said arms, substantially as described.
Intestimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
