Description
PATBNTED MAY 5, 1903.5 D. BACKLUND. GARMENT sUPPoRTER. APPLIUATION FILED SEVPTJS. 1907.
W z TNESSES UNITED STAESLAENVI OFFIQE.
DANIEL BACKLUND, OF BEMIDJI, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO P. J. RUSSELL,
- OF BEMIDII, MINNESOTA.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1908.
Application led September 13, 1907. Serial No. 392,786.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I,DANIEL BACKLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bemidji, in the county of Beltrami and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment supporters and my object is to provide a device of this class whereby the nether garments will be secured to the trousers.
A further object is to provide means for locking the supporter in engagement with thenether garment, and a still further object is tol provide means for removably securing the supporter to the trousers.
Other objects and advantages will be here inafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved supporter' ready for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view therethrough showing the manner of locking the parts of the device together. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the supporter showing parts thereof in position to release the nether garments, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view as seen on line 4*4 Fig. 3, the position of parts of the supporter being shown in full and dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the body of my improved supporter, the upper end of which is reduced to form a tongue 2 that portion of the tongue adjacent its union with the body being bent to a horizontal position to form a ledge 3, on which is mounted a clamping plate 4.
The plate 4 is provided with a slot 5 through which the ledge 3 extends, said slot being formed by striking down a portion of the clamping plate and bending the severed portion at right angles to the face of the clamping plate to form a shoulder 6 which cooperates with the under face of the ledge 3 when the body portion and plate are clamped together.
The lower end of the body 1 is provided with a flange 7 formed by bending the extreme lower end of the body to a horizontal position, while the lower end of the clamping plate 4 is provided with a similar flange 8, the flange 7 being slightly below the plane of the flange S so that when the plate 4 is clamped in engagement with the body 1 the parts of the nether garments between the two flanges will be positively engaged and prevented from slipping, the free edges of said flanges being notched or provided with teeth, whereby the holding qualities thereof will be increased.
In order to lock the clamping plate in engagement with the body 1, I pivotally secure to the upper end of the tongue 2 a locking bar 9, one end of the bar being curved inwardly to form a cam 10 which is adapted to engage the outer face of the clamping plate 4 adjacent the lower end thereof, while the opposite end of the locking bar is bent upon itself to form a substantially U-shaped clip 11 which is adapted to extend over and engage the band of the trousers.
In securing the supporter in position on the garments the locking bar 9 is rotated on its pivot pin 12 until its longitudinal aXis is at right angles to the longitudinal aXis of the body 1, or in the position shown in Fig. 3, when the clamping plate 4 may be moved away from the body 1 or to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4 when the upper edge of the nether garment is placed ,between the body 1 and plate 4 and the plate again returned to its closed position when the locking bar 9 is again rotated on its pivot pin and the clamping plate 4 pressed into engagement with the body 1 by the cam 10. The clip 11 is then introduced over the band of the trousers, thereby positively supporting the nether garments.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very cheap and economical form of garment supporter and one that can be readily applied to use or entirely removed from engagement with the garment.
What I claim is:
1. A garment supporter, comprising the combination with a body having a tongue at one end thereof and a flange at the opposite end thereof, 'a portion of said tongue being bent to form a ledge, of a clamping plate adapted to cooperate with said body, a flange at the lower end of said clamping plate, said clamping platehaving a slot adj aeentits upper end, a shoulder at the lower edge of said slot adapted to rest below said ledge, and means to clamp the plate in engagement with the body and secure a garment therebetween.
2. In a garment supporter, the combination with a body having a tongue at its upper end, a ortion of said tongue forming a ledge and a iliange at the lower end of said body g of a clamping plate having a slot adjacent its upper end adapted to receivey said tongue, a shoulder at the lower edge of said slot adapted to eoperate with the ledge on the body, a flange at the lower end of said clamping plate and in a plane above the flange on the body, a locking bar pivotally secured to said tongue, a Cam on said locking bar adapted to force the clamping plate into engagement with the garment interposed between the clamping plate and body, and means at the upper end of the locking bar to secure the same to an outer garment.
3. In a garment supporter, the eombination with a body having a tongue at its upper end, and a ledge between the tongue and body; of a Clamping plate having'a slot adjacent its upper end, a shoulder on said clamping plate adapted to eoperate with said ledge, a loekingvbar pivotally secured to the upper end of said body adapted to force the clamping plate into engagement with the lgody, and a clip at the opposite end of said In testimony whereoll I have signed my name to this specification in the two subscribing witnesses.
