EUGENE F. BA DG LEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
AIR-TIGHT BUTTER OR OTHER PRODUCE PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,285, dated November 1, 1887 Application filed April 2, 1887. Serial No. 233,391.
To all whom it may concern.-
'Be it known that I, EUGENE F. BADGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city andcounty of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Butter and other Produce Air-Tight Package, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improved means for tightly securing the covers on butter buckets or packages, which will be fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings,in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improved bucket, taken in the plane indicated by dotted line a: m on Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the bucket, taken in the course of the dotted line y y on Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top view of the covered bucket. Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the central closing-wedge. Fig. 5 is a detail in section, showing the croze in the bucket. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the latch detached from the closing-wedge.
Referring to the annexed drawings by letters, A designates a circular bucket having an annular croze, a, in its inner side near its upper edge. B, B, and O designate the three parts constituting the cover of said bucket. The two parts B B are of equal size and are somewhat less than semicircles. These coversegments B B are constructed with the flanges b, which closely lie upon the upper edge of the bucket. They are also constructed with beveled heads a, which are adapted to fit snugly in the croze a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The
part 0, I denominate a closing-wedge, which, when it is forcibly pressed in place, lies between the segments B B and causes their angular beads c to tightly fit into the croze a. This intermediate wedge, O,is constructed with (Model.)
nose, 1', on one end. The spring-shank of this latch is recessed into one side of the wedge O, nearest that end where the bead is omitted.
At right angles to the latch and in line with its beveled nose t a slot, 70, is made transversely through the wedge O, which slot receives a hooked extension, j, of the latch, and also a key passes through a key-hole, g.
The two segmental portions B B of the cover are first adjusted in their places in the bucket and separated, so that their beads c a will 'enter the croze a. The wedge O is then forcibly pressed into its place between said segments until the nose of the latch engages in a recess, d, in the edge of segment B. The bucket is now tightly covered, and the sections composing the cover can only be removed by the use of a key, with which the latch is retracted. The wedge is then removed and the two segments brought together in the center of the bucket and also removed therefrom.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination, with the crozed bucket, of the flanged and beaded segments B B, an intermediate flanged and beaded closing-wedge, O, and a spring-latch provided with a hook by which a key may be used for unlatching it,
