IMPROVEMENT I'N SAP-SPOUTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,326, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. PosT, of Hinesburg, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Metallic Sap-Spouts, Bucket-Hangers, and Sap-Bucket Covers combined; and the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of one of my improved modes of constructing the lips for fastening the metallic sap-spout to the tree, with the hook or bucketh an ger attached, the sapbucket on the hook, and the lid or cover to the bucket hinged to the hanger. Fig. 2 shows the same sap-spout and bucket-hanger with a slight modiiication of the lips for fastening to the tree. Fi g. 3 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig; 4 shows a top view of another mode of constructing the lip fastenings. Figs. 5 and 6 show a side and top view of still another inode of constructing metallic sap-spouts. Fig. 7 shows an edge and top view of bucket-cover. Fig. 8 shows another form of spout and bucket-hook.
My invention relates to non-corrosive metallic sap-spout, first patented by me November 24, 1868; and my improvements consist in the several modifications for the form of the lips or fastenin gs to secure the metallic spouts to the trees; also, combining with the spout the metallic hook or bucket-hanger; likewise, the detachable lid or bucket-cover.
To enable others to make and use my several improvements in sap-gathering apparatus, I will describe them more fully, referring to the drawing and to the letters marked thereon.
The spout A, as shown in Figs. l, 5, and 6, is provided with a hooked or bent-up lip, a, which is strengthened by a thin rib, b, on the upper side, connecting it with a rim or flange, c, above the oriice which admits the flow of the sap from thebore in the tree through the spout, the under D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, has only amodiiied F form of lip-fastenings to hold it in the bore of the tree; `the bucket-hanger O being the same to connect a lid or cover, as above described.
The spouts so constructed can be inserted in the trees sufticiently tight and will hold the sap from leakage without being driven in, and when the season is over can be taken out easily without breaking or damage to them or the tree, and may be kept in good condition and used successively for a lifetime.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters'latent, is-
l. A metallic sap-spout, provided with lips or catches, as shown, for the purpose of holding iirmly into the tree, substantially as speclfied.
2. The combination of the hinged cover E with the hook C and spout A, as above specified.
3. The detachable bucket-hanger O, in combi.
nation with a metallic sap-spout, as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name.
