METALLIC SEAL FOR HOLDING KNOTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 6, 1909.
Patented Jan. 11, 1910. Serial No. 476,525.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac S. BRASSING" TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Seals for Holding Knots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in seals for holding knots from untying and comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of my invention to a knot. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the seal before being bent. Fig. 4: is a modification of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the pieces shown in the modified form.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a plank of metal having wings B, C, D and E and each of said wings is scored or perforated along the lines F in order to allow the wings to break readily when bent. The two wings B and D are provided with elongated slots I-I parallel. to each other adjacent to one end and each wing has recesses J adjacent to its base forming means whereby a rope may pass therethrough without interference, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Each of the wings E and C is provided with an integral contracted tongue 0 designed to be passed through registering slots in the two arms B and D when brought together in the manner shown in the drawings.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, I have shown a slight modification of the invention in which the seal is made up of two separate strips, designated respectively by letters S and T, which in other respects are similar to the seal shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
I11 applying a seal, the wings are brought about the knot in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the strips 0 passed through the registering slots in the overlapping ends of the wings B and D, thence bent back as shown, forming a secure locking means for the knot. By the provision of the wings having a perforated or scored line adjacent to their bases, said wings are designed to break along these lines in the event of tampering with the seal.
What I claim to be new is l. A seal for holding knots from untying comprising two pairs of wings adapted to overlap one another, one of said pairs of wings being slotted and the other pair of wings being imperforate and having straps adapted to be passed through said slots and bent each at an angle to hold the seal in place.
2. A seal for holding knots from untying comprising two pairs of wings adapted to overlap one another, one of said pairs of wings being slotted and the other pair of wings being imperforate and having straps adapted to be passed through said slots and bent each at an angle to hold the seal in place, each of said wings having a series of recesses adjacent to its base.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC S. BRASSINGTON. Vitnesses GEO. F. KRAPP, Jos. J. KENNEY.
